OT is GOOD or BAD??

Recommended Posts

A buddy told me we cant blame newbies for not searching in the forum coz there are too many OT in the thread. So am thinking is OT good or bad?? If without OT will the forum be dead?? Thanks to those OTing here you knows who you are & i m guilty as charge too :) In order to keep the forum alive!! Is it the only way to go or shld be stick to the question like we are attending a course?? As for some may agreed that mixtures is the way. But the question is how to balance it & having some OT is good for the forum?

IMHO, OT is good, can liven up the forum so it won't be so dead. Members can get to know each other better. But it's not an excuse for not using the search function. I was a newbie once and I searched before asking.

Yes, I agree OT is quite rampant, dunno why people always must OT.

(mods/admin, want to consider a random thread? thats what we did for another forum, so people can OT in there with entirely random psotings, and leave the proper threads alone.)

TCSS thread? Can tcss all we want?

But newbies told me that is hectic to look for an answer where all the OT kicks in. Aparts from this, by skipping the pages might miss out the important information too.

Yes, that was the whole idea. a giant rubbish bin of inconsequential rantings. then should a proper topic grow out of that, we would take it out as a separate forum thread.

Ok I change to jovial...happy?

you saying i fat issit? only fat people kena called jovial. wassup, brudda?

I think its more the search engine. I had problem searching the posts. No doubt there is OT, but to search the posts can be a tad tricky. Maybe because of the header. No strong objections. It's a free forum. U guys decide on house rules I follow... :D

i am a newbie too. frankly, this is not as bad as BMWSG. It's not hard to use the search function, honestly. And part of the point of joining a community is to know the people here. if you are new and all you want is information that has a direct impact on you (how much? buy from where? call who? can use your name to get discount?), then is SGMerc any poorer by not having you here? you have to scroll through pages to get something? tough shit, asshole. we are not here to give you a summary, CEOs. You want information, you have to dig, just like everyone else before you.

you want fries with that?

There is life outside the company gate, so don't OT (over time) so much. Before you know, you will wonder what have you done in life.

Ok, back to the OT, OT in thread is good. We just need to Aga Aga, OT a bit and go back to topic again la.

Why you guys dont like newbies to post repeated questions? I've seen so many forums screwing the newbies with posts like "google is your best friend", "please search its been discussed to death" kinda remarks. If you have time to post that, why dont you just bloody reply the qn??

For a newbie, it is easier to log into his 'own thread' to ask the different qn he has, and for him to log in subsequently to see whether there are new replies or not, regardless the qn is good or bad or simply stupid. Btw, there is no such thing as a stupid qn. If you cant stand newbie qns, please look at other threads with "lao jiao" qns.

If we strictly ban or stop OT, then we dont need a forum anymore, just a website with all info pasted... Ok a more moderated approach would be to sticky all the useful information and advise all newbies to read before posting.

For me, I will try my best to ans the qn with whatever knowledge I gained from the forum, even if the qn has been asked before. In a way, it is to give back what i learned.

But most importantly it is to clock post count, HYM i want to over take your 1k post count leh! :D

Just to add some salt and pepper.

Most netizens are not aware that utilizing proper search terms to narrow down desired results is an art form hence most will give up soon after. Results are also heavily dependent on how the post is constructed (propah English or Singlish).

ie, KNN SMLJ c200 power steering koyak vs C200 power steering failure makes a huge difference :P

Aiyah live and let live in a perfectly imperfect world.

Easy one to answer. If someone is really earnest, they wouldve searched before asking. So a "What rims should I get?" question should get a re-direction to the appropriate thread. A modified question of a similar that indicates some thought process behind the question, such as "I can't decide between BC Racing forged rims and AMG rims, how? got advice?" warrants genuine input. YC, I agree we should give back what we learnt, but I'm sure you agree we didn't learn by throwing out generic questions.

Newbie wont get his answers posting in his own thread probably , not here anyway.

sometimes, you have to inculcate a culture. if i flippantly ask you what rims are good can intro shop how much it cost is that with tyres can i sell my stock rims on day two and get day one pricing, and you entertain me, will you relent and also answer the other 1001 similar queries? when does that stop? should it happen at all? would it be so bad if we all behave online just like how we behave in real life - responsible adults who can walk and chew gum at the same time?

But most importantly it is to clock post count, HYM i want to over take your 1k post count leh! :D

welcome welcome! the more the merrier, then this forum will become more active and more people will join. ultimately, people will only stick around when there are like-minded individuals to shoot the breeze with!

I think a forum is only interesting, fun because of some funny characters and comradeship built up over time. Agree that some form of house rules/housekeeping must be done. Especially those who sign up just to sell stuff etc. But the ultimate aim is to build a community of enthusiasts. So some OT keeps the threads alive and in the midst, built friendship....

Newbies not searching for an answer is not the way to go. Many of us here contributed vast knowledge & type it here word by word & yet another newbies asking the same question is fine with u guys? However if the threads infected with so much OT i cant blame newbies for not searching as they got "lost" after reading few pages.

So can i presume that OT is the way to go & without it no point having a forum? Lingos & abbreviations is another issue to be discussed too.

Anyway, I m not surprise after this threads another newbie will post is OT good or not!! Then we go another big round to keep the forum going ya!!
