Cases of teens with STIs triple in 5 years

Judith Tan

Thu, Mar 13, 2008

The Straits Times

IN SINGAPORE, the number of teens and adolescents with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has more than tripled in the last five years.

In the first nine months of last year, 657 youngsters aged between 10 and 19 sought treatment for a variety of STIs.

This number was three times that for the whole of 2002.

These preliminary findings come from a study being done by the Department of Community, Occupational and Family Medicine at the National University of Singapore. It will be completed in two months.

Comprehensive data for all STIs has not been released.

Several surveys conducted among Singapore youngsters have revealed a more liberal attitude towards pre-marital sex.

Mrs Tan-Wu Mei Ling, centre director for the Student Care Service in Hougang, told The Straits Times that awareness and education about sexual relationships and STIs work best among teens.

'They have to be taught to make informed choices. The basic message is that such diseases exist among teens, that they are not exempted,' she said.

Her centre conducts talks at schools and group workshops on relationships, sex and STIs.

'We also have one-to-one counselling but this is usually after the fact. We would advise the teen to see a doctor and once the disease has been ascertained, advise the teen to manage the condition,' she added.
