Took me some time to continue in this thread as I was flamed earlier by an irate opposing member, much less a moderator. It's not a rich or poor issue, even though I was portrayed as a ppl up there or atas. Rather it's about penny wise, pound foolish. Let's face it, we owners of Mercedes in this forum may or may not be well off, but we are definitely not poor.

Allow me to share my humbling experience with replicas. In 1997, after taking delivery of my brand new BMW E39, I went straight to change into a replica18" AC Schnitzer 5 spoke rim which I had my eyes on for some time. At 1/3 the price of the original, it was a no brainer in buying it. Of course I checked them for origin of manufacture (Made in Italy) & the tuv marking for a peace of mind. About a year later, my front & rear right wheels ran over a small pothole along Old Holland Rd while doing a hard corner. I didnt pay any heed to this incident till the next day when my maid discovered a crack on the outer edge of the rim while washing the car. I brought the car back to the same tyre dealer & had them removed. Lo & behold, the rear rim had a hairline crack too on closer examination. As I had knowingly bought these replicas I wasn't surprised that there's no warranty or compensation for this damage. In fact, the tyre dealer agreed with me that the embossed country of origin & tuv can be questionable.

Indulge me a little more with some common sense explanation. The bigger the rim size (19" & above), the likelier it may crack under extreme condition. Even original rims are not exempted. Why? The ultra low profile tyres are simply not providing enough cushion effect to prevent damage. Replicas will likely be more prone to damage than originals in my opinion. However, the success stories of replicas we hear so often are mostly smaller rim size. Really, I have no issues with these smaller replicas, in fact, they make good buys. This is the reason why i feel that replicas should not get a blanket approval as there's a hidden danger.

Quoting a Chinese saying....if you keep climbing the same mountain that's known to have a prowling tiger, sooner or later you will come face to face with it.

Actually I saw your rims at LS. 1.5k per pc w/o tyres. That's double of what I usually pay for rims alone. Your rims r swee! :becky:
