What width tyres are you on, and what is your tyre pressure?? rolling resistance plays a big part in highway fuel consumption. Maybe do a quick tune up - clean the contacts on the distributor cap and rotor, check the plugs and cables, and adjust the idle air-fuel ratio. After all that is done, go for a good 4 wheel alignment. Other things that will affect your FC over a long distance - the condition of your wheel bearings, differential etc etc.. take your time to work through them. I now average 8.2-8.4 driving around Singapore, which is ok I guess for my engine. Guys on the 2.0 can get 9+ in Singapore and over 11 on NSH.

*edit

p.s. the claimed factory performance is 13.9 / 11.2 / 9.2 (11.1) km/l ECE for 90/120/City. Real life figure more like 11.4-14.6 / 7.3-9.3 / 9.2-11.7 / 10.6 :extra-urban / city / highway / average combined

Thank you for the advices appreciate , yes e FC is bearing me down ... Quite light footed already :( .... Las chk at workshop did mention my wheel bearings need replacement ... Yes I'll be doing alignment after my H&R lowering springs installed .... My tyre are 225 .... Pressure abt 245kpa .... Next stop at workshop gona chk air fuel ratio , change bearings .... Hopefully after car lowered will improve FC too ? As less wind drag under chassis ? Haha

Burn carbon means above their camera lens clarity.

I did once non- stop with four big size loads and boot full of luggage, from tuas to penang, in the wee hours, I managed 1 full tank, once reached penang city, I still got 1/4 tank balance.

Btw which workshop you go?

Hmmm looks like my bearings also need replacement liao, this could be my cause of poor fc lately

Hi guys, i used to own a W203 C class, sold it off as the date was due then, changed to a couple of cars thereafter.

recently seeing the preowned cars and the new cars being too expensive for me as i'm starting a family soon.

Saw a few W124 off the market of late selling, just want to know of the common faults/problems with this model and what do i have to look out for as this is a COE car, so basically i can only buy and hope it last til the end.... cos selling will be an issue right?

any workshops specializing in this make/model as it's after all quite an old model, and my concern is of getting the parts being available locally.

Please kindly advise.

Thanks.

Like ANY used car, buy a good one, cared for by someone competent.

Parts are not expensive, and plentiful. There are plenty of workshops that claim to be "specialists", and most seem to be ok, given this is an easy car to work on. Lack of complicated electronics means that lots can be DIY'd if you know how to use a socket wrench.

The 2 weaknesses - very few mechanics are any good with electrics, and because it takes time to properly diagnose (unlike nowadays where you can just plug in the OBD scanner), you will commonly see patch fixes, where wiring looms have been butchered, and relays spliced in to fix symptoms, while the root problem persists. The other thing is very few actually understand the KE-Jetronic injection system, so they bypass parts to get a car running smooth but you end up with poor fc/performance etc.

So look out for cars that have lots of aftermarket wiring/relays in and around the engine bay (usually near the a/c compressor or behind the battery compartment), butchered wiring below the fusebox or the relay compartment behind the battery.

The pristine cars are often sold before they even hit the market, though that's not to say the one's for sale aren't good - the usual buyer beware caveat applies. This would be the difference between a happy and problem-free ownership experience, and one fraught with frustration and tears and $$$.

W124s are the last of the no expenses spared policy of Mercedes-Benz.

It's built to last.

Note it's not as powerful as W203, nor will its FC be able to match W203

Parts currently is till plentiful and cheap, quite a number of workshops are able to do servicing

Those major works will definitely have to get those specialist

If I am not mistaken, this dealer normally got their car done up at Zen Motor in ubi. Used to go there when I driving my W124.

Another one worth a visit is Trendy motor in Sin Ming

Is zen motor able to restore and maintain W124s? How's your experience with them?

Experience been good.

But I have not been there many years as no longer driving the W124.

The thing about driving older car is you must have time and be patience for them to work on the car. Parts for W124 I believe still a plenty; rare part may need to source. Ah Hui (Zen Motor) will ask me to use OEM is the parts is doable. If not he will ask me to go original. Generally he will not ask me to change parts unless it is necessary.

I let them handle my 1991 BMW E36 325i too.. but seem they did a better job for the W124
