W204 Aircon select (air coming from outside or air cirulating within cabin)

hi guys,

I noticed everytime I start the engine, turn on the aircon, I have to select the aircon knob to "air circulating within cabin", and after more than 30 min or so, it auto changed to "air coming from outside".. I have to then set to the "air circulating with cabin" again, if not all the exhaust fumes smell enters the cabin..

Is this normal, or is there something wrong with any sensor? My ex ride was a japanese car, when I select to "air circulating within cabin", it remained that unless I switched to "air coming from outside"..

I hope you will be able to understand what I am talking about, as I dunno what is the exact term to use.

Thanks in advance for advice given. :)

Bro, yes the air con circulation is by default set per what u experienced, everything u mentioned is NORMAL.

Seems errrrrr.... stupid, but I recall the guys discussed b4, somewhere in the forum.

No way u can change it, now after a couple of weeks of driving, whenever I start my ride, I will press the "air circulation" switch to on the air con, ECO switch to off the ECO mode, and On the radio, then the journey starts.

Thanks bro.. I guess then it will be a matter of getting used to.. At least feel at ease that it's not something wrong with the aircon. Oh I have yet to figure out the ECO mode thing.. I usually will just adjust the right hand knob, aircon fan speed; hehee.. have not figured out the left hand knob.

Take heart that at least you won't die of carbon monoxide poisoning since it will open the vent.

This feature is useful for long distance driving as it force fresh air to renew the stale ones inside. Refreshing the air, just like in an airplane helps to prevent sleepiness to a certain extend. When I was driving in Germany, the vent was left open since the country air is good.

I like this feature and I am sure you will get used to it. Welcome to Mercedes-Benz.

You use the left knob only when you select "Zone", meaning to say the right one control the driver's side aircon temp and the left one control passenger's side aircon temp....

Yeah thanks bro.. It is in fact good for long distance driving especially not in heavily congested roads with high levels of carbon monoxide at jams. i have more or less gotten used to.. :)

Wow.. I suddenly feel I am so ignorant hahaha.. So it's for passenger side temp, no wonder got temp adjust also.. I was reading the manual, but seeing so thick, I kept away.. Will start to explore more again..

It was done on purpose so that when u drive longer than 30mins the air vents automatically open to let the air in the car out and change to fresh air. so after 30mins u have to press air circulate again. Sometimes a sweesh of foul smell will be the reminder to turn it on again.

That is the fun of MB , start engine, press the vent. While driving after 30 mins you either smell burning smell or feel some hot air. It's an indication the vent is open again. Time to press n close the vent. Soon you were get use to it. Auto-human reaction. Hahaha

Why can't MB learnt from BMW, where they have an Auto, and Manual Switch. Both from the same EU mah.. Haha

Welcome to MB! Let me guess... C180 Blue efficiency?

I checked with the SE some years ago and was told this was compliant to EU regulations and what the bros mentioned about circulating air and sleepiness is spot on!

You'll learn to get use to it,

BMW has got lots to learn from MB.... The very basic is how to build a problem free and reliable car.... That they already dunno... What else are they good at?
