Thanks for the sound advice bro j888,

This was my thought too. (repairing or replacement of tranny in workshop other than C&C).

Glad to know you've done a bit of homework for your W221 tranny repair cost.

I am beginning to enjoy my N.A. W211 E230 very much (3 weeks now) but am concern over the 7G tronic tranny failure issue. (like what happen to bro Ken100 E280)

It is purely stock (no modification whatsoever at all) and was pleased to know that tranny valve body had been replaced software updating before.

Don't worry about the gear box lah. Just enjoy the smooth ride. No point worrying about something u can't control. Maybe it won't even spoilt for the next 10 years!

Agree bro j888. Worry this worry that = no fun in driving it liao, haha. Just enjoy the car as what I am doing now and worry only when problem comes.

I believe there's always a $$$olution for it haha.

Bro AHYEO, yes, went NSHW two weeks ago and 'lut" until 150km/h for a short duration , agree that I felt it can still go higher speed some more.

However, it takes a really while to climb to the higher speed >120km/h being n.a. engine. Or maybe car really old liao, "boi chau liao" (cannot run so fast)

Should lut after 185km/h lei...

Below that lenses still clear... oops

Yours still can go above 220km/h

Tested till 240km/h :)

 and I think electronically limited

But then got chiat by a Ford Expendition big big pickup

I think that monster is turbodiesel , dunno how many CC

I go near him just to test test, he let me pass, I lut, he catch up, I let him pass, then I catch up, he let me pass again

then I kay kiang, lut all the way, he follow up fast, I lut till cannot go anymore, he still on my backside

I LL, have to let him pass lor

Also, scary lor, as what boss mr seah say, lens not clear leow !

maybe that's how my 7G tronic died, haha

Last Wednesday, my greatest fear came true.

Without any indication nor warning signs, The tranny gearbox went into emergency (limp) mode!!! I couldn't shift gear while moving off a traffic junction on my way back to office from a very late lunch. Panic stricken, I called up my car dealer immediately and was requested to drive to them for checking.  I could drive only at 30km/h~40km/h !!!

The car dealer confirm there's indeed an issue and requested me to send it to their specialist auto transmission workshop in Pandan Loop area. (Top Speed Motor). I proceed there without any delay as car dealer agree to repair this as per warranty given. Shifting to D or R gave the car a harsh vibrating shock as we tested !!!

Top Speed Motor diagnosed using a ODBII hardware tool and showed me the following fault code

P0717

P0718

*turbine speed sensor in valve body not present/faulty

They managed to clear the fault code immediately and said the car can be driven normally off for temporary basis and the faulty part should be replaced as soonest as the problem is bound to re-occur This can be said as the single most common problem with 7G Tronic gearboxes across all Merc model they explained.

Car was back to normal and there' s not a sign of any mechanical damage.

I went back to them the next morning and the repair/ replacement work was done in one single morning. I retrieve the car back right after lunch hour.

They showed me the parts replaced (a large piece of metal/plastic coated plate with several electronic PCB surrounding it. It is said that the MB original part is no longer available but they are getting the re-cond parts from a German supplier. The person in charge said all MB gearboxes (no matter old or new) are all mechanically sound/built and the problem usually from the electronic related and seldom from mechanical related. I did not inquire about the repair bill but seems that these guys know how to deal with this kinda problem easily.

Hopefully,  by this gearbox repair will last me for a long time without re-occurring.

If anyone here face with same the problem, suggest to contact this workshop.

Hey I not trying to be funny hor

Heng that it died during your warranty period, saves you some $$$$

So one of my chinaman mechanic is right, Merc GB dun die so easily, most of the time is the electronic parts

I dun understand why MB puts a plastic part in a GB !

722.9 boxes typically suffer from one of 2 issues, yours being the conductor plate with the speed sensors attached to them and the other common fault being the valve body.

Good to know you've got it all sorted and heres wishing you plenty more happy motoring years!

Yes bro AHYEO,

looks exactly like this pic. I also don't understand why it is plastic material?

yalor, put plastic inside a bloody hot GB is just a matter of time before it fail !

btw, my mechanic says that "plastic" should last 200K km, dunno true or not leh

Unfortunately, the input/output speed sensors on the conductor board are the weak links in the conductor board. At least there are reliable repair solutions available nowadays - imagine in the not so distant past where it was mainly a 1 to 1 gearbox exchange policy much like the current Porsche PDK gearbox made by ZF.

I think MB do not manufacture these sensor parts themselves and repair method(s) is/are already commercialize and should be widely available by now for technology that is decade old.

Found this link from Wikipedia (German language website) which offer the corresponding solution for 722.9 repair parts (error codes P0717 / P0718 / P02767 / P02768):
