Engine Oil Change

Recommended Posts

I have changed the engine oil at 57k km in mid Feb 2014 at C&C and the next engine oil is at 72k km. As I seldom use the car, it has just clocked 62k km and the Service A warning sign just appear. Went to C&C and asked them why even before the 72k km the Service A warning light appear.

SA said that even have not reach 72k km, the engine oil is already one year old and the Service A light will appear because one year old oil must change. Even though the car travelled only 5k km, the SA said the one year old engine oil has lost viscosity, some other particles will appear & blah blah blah.

SA told me to change the engine oil. Should I listen to the SA to change oil or just continue driving till 72k km. Is there such a thing as engine oil will turn bad even I just use the car like 5k km in one year. If I continue driving the car, will the engine oil damage the engine? Any good advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Unless is still under warranty. My previous ride after warranty I did everything outside and just reset the cluster.

No rocket science to change engine oil,oil filter, brake pad, Air Filter, Gear oil.....

This 15K or 1 year whichever come first is kind of rubbish in Singapore. C&C base everything within German Climate.

In Singapore weather is hot. Engine oil easily breakdown.

Since my first car till now, I always do a change at 5K and the rest at 10K.

Maybe I'm kaisu but it always good to be safe.

U can do more not less 15km is just a guide line. Whats your ride for every 5km & 10k interval oil change?

Mine is a W212 2009 model and I changed engine oil every 10k km, not 15k km as advice by C&C. Due to not using the car most of the time in 2014, last service at 57k was in Feb 2014. Now is only 62k, which engine oil usage is like 5k. As the Service A is lighted up, C&C SA said that even I have done 5k travel in a year, the engine oil should be change after one year. SA mentioned that DUE DATE is up for the engine oil even the car only travel 5k in one year. My question is whether there is an EXPIRY DATE for the engine oil even though it has not fully utilised the 10k or 15k usage. Thanks.

I m not a technical guy since SA advised to change engine oil every year i guess why not. I see your point, why need to change oil if mileage is low. Not sure whether viscosity will be affected etc.

Based on my limited knowledge, viscosity is affected mainly by high temp and dust.

So if vehicle not of high mileage and not driven hard .. there is not really any compelling reason to change it. Also Singapore roads aren't the dustiest in this region.

And assuming vehicle is not parked near dusty construction sites.

Hence if TS can't convince himself with AD suggestions then TS can just go with his heart to change much later.

But in any case, the cost of an oil change is minimal whereas the damage to the engine could be more severe ... hence exercise prudence and err on the side of caution would be my take

I try to diligently do my oil change every 5000-6000km for all my rides.....its true the guidelines are for a different climate....Singapore weather is different plus the driving style also differs....a lot of start and stops....little long drives....this surely affects the engine oil.

So might also consider what type of engine oil.....had earlier in another post mentioned REDLINE engine oil which I had used for my ex ride (Scirocco)...its supposedly good for TURBO engines....tried for my W204 not too bad....much cheaper than Mobil Gold....as I change engine oil frequently, my mechanic friend suggested to use alternative engine oil to save abit.

I just changed Mobil 1 5W-50 6 litres at $160 (Mobil 1) plus oil filter & other checks, labour etc = $238 for just the Service A package. It is an outside workshop and not C&C. I believed most outside workshops charges above $200 for a normal Service A package, either for C or E Class. Is that standard price or there are workshops out there that can go below $200 for a Service A package (6 litres oil included).
