BMW 5 series vs Mercedes E-class

Recommended Posts

Hi Bros,

A friend of mine asked me whether he should get the BMW 5 series or Mercedes E-class. Which is a better car?

it will be better for your friend to go test drive..........personally i prefer Sheer Driving Pleasure......

For the fresh look and uniqueness, I think the e class is better as not alot fl w212 on the rd now. Especially with the new loan rules.

Once Comfort comes in am sure there will be alot more on the road.....

The 5-series seems to be a better drive with 8-speed and bigger screen for GPS, parking etc.

You'll never catch up with technology. As asiadj said, Merc will be coming out with the 9 speed gear box soon, what next? Wait for BMW to launch a 10 speed?

Ultimately, it's your friend's choice. Everyone has their own personal criteria of choosing cars. The style, comfort level and handling I like might not suit your friend. Both are nice cars he/she has to try both out and decide for him/herself.

BMW got some inherent issues like radiator coolant and engine oil require frequent top up and some other problems. Not sure if the newer batches have these resolved. All in all, Merc do have some fair share of problems but less. The talk about handling to me is more marketing hype than applicable to our daily drives, unless we are talking about circuit driving which require to negotiate tight bends at insane speeds. Merc do handles reasonably well with precise steering on the softer side, and is more than sufficient for most people use. I rate durability, reliability, prestige, comfort and economy of ownership as important criteria.

I said my piece, the rest is head over heart or heart over head.

Juz last week my friend 2 yr old BMW 523i radiator overheat, temp shot up to 120. Send in to PM they said becos his servicing overdue didn't change engine oil, so engine very hot, then after change engine oil it still shot up to 100, they said normal. My friend said usually about 90 before tis issue happened.

Sounds scary! Does Merc has the same problem? How would you know if the radiator overheat?

Just a matter of hard luck.... Ask zai zai... his E-coupe has disco thermo gauge....

some Bimmers can last the whole 10 year cycle without major faults,,, while my friend's F10 stays in hospital for 2 months in the first 3 months he had the car....

Heard of some Merc broke down within a month of collection.... So IMHO it's just whether you are heng or sway.....
