GPS with Huper Optik window film

Recommended Posts

Hi, has anyone faced issues with Garmin GPS losing satellite reception with the Huper Optik film provided by C&C? It loses satellite connection even driving under trees. Once you go through any tunnel, it stops connecting until you stop the car in an open area for 5 minutes.

My car did not come with built in GPS, so I brought over my Garmin 2565 gps, which worked perfectly fine on my previous car with Vcool film. Current car is a B180 btw.

Any known solutions without cutting a hole in the window film?

Many years ago (<10 yrs ago) portable Garmin gps has weak gps signal reception with V-Kool ceramic base film

Afaik Huber Optics has no problem with portable Garmin GPS.

imho look more like your Nuvi 2565 might have poor signal reception problem.

Go switch off your Nuvi 2565, walk outside your car and turn on the Nuvi 2565.

Tap on the signal strength bar you should be able to see the satellites & the signal strength of each satellite your Nuvi 2565 is trying to connect.

See how long it takes to take the gps signals accuracy to within <10m

Cheers

Same issue on my W176 A180. iPhone GPS only works if it's on the passenger seat or on the dashboard. Were you leaving the GPS on the centre console? My iPhone can't get GPS when it's on centre console.

Thanks for this info. I am also having this problem. Let me try placing the phone on my passenger seat and see if there is any improvement.

while waiting for the new battery to arrive, i tried bro kepiting's tip. took the gps out of the car and turned it on, connected to satellites within a minute and about 11m accuracy. brought it back to the car and drove out of the car park. lost satellite reception(hear that alot now) once i turn out of the carpark(open) and drove under some trees... I really hope a new battery will help.

Bro try move your GPS to difference location. I wonder if it's due to some interference.

Mine is install on the top right end of the wind screen and is working fine.

I have problem with my key if I kept it in the pocket with my phone. Unable to unlock or lock the car.

OK, i tried shifting the position of the GPS. Found one spot to the left of the center, middle of the dashboard where the reception was good(10meters). In other positions, example nearer the screen in the middle, or right in front of me, the reception is non existent. So maybe try moving your GPS around. I dont why it would be like that, only thing i can assume is interference.

So now i just leave the GPS in that position, hard to reach it though. At least it has reception. It may be different for your car.

Disclaimer: I did this while parked in an open carpark with nothing blocking overhead.

Ya I am having problem with my iPhone GPS too, is there something c&c can do to rectify the problem or is it something that we have to live with?

My gps location keeps shifting and rerouting..

Anyway to fix it? Tell c&c something wrong with the huper optik film? Ask them change? Or is it something else inferring with the signal ?

I think we need to check with other brands of handphone as well, before we can conclude it's due to the Huper Optik solar film, which by right should only be cutting out UV & IR rays.

You can read the following article to understand more about the Huper Optik solar film and why it uses nano ceramic coating of Titanium Nitride (TiN) instead of metallic film coating.

http://www.vquestfilms.com/blog/2011/01/huper-optik-nano-ceramic-window-film-in-a-league-of-its-own/

From my limited knowledge working in the semi-con industry, TiN is also used for it's semi-conducting properties, and as such shouldn't affect GPS and even RF signals.

Coming to RF signals, I rather hope the solar film can block this, as this may mean free ERP entries  :D

Since I haven't read about anyone not being deducted money from the cash cards at ERP gantries, or have difficulties going in & out of car parks with EPS, I can only conclude it could be due to the iPhone.

Just to clarify, I'm not an Apple hater, as I'm also using iPhone 6 .

I sent in my car and asked about the poor IPhone GPS reception in the car and if it's caused by the huper optik film or some other interference, the service advisor just said that it's not merc built-in GPS or the ones installed by them so they can't do anything about it.

So unless we have a large enough number of owners who feedback about the poor gps reception, they prob won't entertain individual cases.
