2013 v5.0 Map (SE Asia) Update for Command Online

Recommended Posts

Just called C&C regarding the 2013 map update. Booked a service appointment next week to get this done. Heard that the update is not free, was quoted something like $800. I told them the car is from C&C and my command online came with the car and therefore under warranty. I certainly would not pay $800 for map updates. They told me to bring the car down for them to check first and they will assess and revert. No problem, I will bring the car for them to check, will certainly make a lot of noise if they ask me to pay.

They told me the update from Germany not free hence the charges.  Anyway, I've given up liao. Relying on my trusty Garmin Nuvi 200W!

No need to make noice, you'll have to pay irregardless if you want the update. Updating of Comand Online maps has never been free irregardless if AD or PI, with or without warranty.

Price for updating NTG4.5 is $800 there abouts. To update NTG4.5, C&C would need to purchase an update code from Diamler unique to each car before the map update can be installed.

IIRC that is true for Europe maps but not the SEA one which applies to us.

An European COMAND DVD Map update cost <EUR 200.00 per DVD

A SEA Map Update DVD cost > S$3000.

Simple economics of price, supply and demand!

imho,

The COMAND option is "expensive" for SEA and few MB actually has COMAND.

This result in lesser demands for COMAND Navigation Maps and less motivation for the mappers (Navteg/TeleAtlas)  to make better maps including postal codes for the SEA markets.

Those lucky guys who bought MB during the MB 125 years anniversary in late 2011 got COMAND inclusive in the vehicle selling price which was "factored in" at a lower price.

Cheers

C&C service sucks! i am having a stand off with them on this same issue. emailed their management on the charges when they should have the responsibilities to update owners on the changes. they quoted me about SGD99 for the disc, SGD400+ for the license and SGD120 for labour! total cost including GST works out to about SGD700+.

Told them its day light robbery, all i got was emails from their customer service saying "it's management team decision and they will not have comment on this".

wtf and my car is still under warranty. emailed their top management and they chose to ignore my email as well. paid about SGD350k for my ride and i get monkies for customer service.

Realistically, this means u need to pay another 7+K in the lifetime of the car since every year there's a map update!

Friends, save your money on map updates for the comand sets (SEA). I have updated my unit after 1 yr....it's not much different from the previous year. IMO, slightly updated by 10-20%. A lot of postal codes & hse no still missing. The new lane near my home is not there. Johor Premium Outlet is still non existent. You want to pay $700 for this so call update? It's best to update every 2 years or not.

Totally agreed. I'm one of the lucky 125th anniversary buyers and doubly lucky I managed to get a 2012 v4.0 update without charge. At least now Marina downtown area is not one big blank.

But as bro jtang mentioned there are still many missing addresses after the update and he's also right in saying it's not worth paying for the updates annually. The map supplier does not specialise in SEA  maps and unless Daimler changes to an Asian speciliast I don't think there will ever be a totally satisfactory SG map on Command.

Having said that I still find Nav to be sufficiently useful to get around - if no 20 is not listed then I'll just select no 22 or whichever nearest number is available - works decently enough for me so far.

This issue is not only on Merc Command but across most of the Conti makes. Even for BMW, Audi , WV, ect the map is not that reliable . sometimes you cant find where you want to go...Thats why I use  my TomTom better, for GPS

The world Most dangerous thing is the Vehicle. Its not about the machine weather its slow or fast. Its the person who is controlling it. The driver is the brain of the Machine. Not the machine itself.

If the driver reacts slow even the most powerful ABS(Auto braking system) will not help. The driver has to give the car the command in Order for the car to react. Afterall he is the brain of the car.

Have a few exchange with them too, is like take it or leave it. I explained to them that the command system is a $9K option and so it is not cheap, we brought a premium car which would last us at least 10 to 20 years only to find that the in-build electronics devices software that comes with the hardware expires without service updates within a year or so. This does not makes sense, the software must remain up to date and valid to use for their purpose throughout the lifespan of the car. Mercedes should take the pro-active approach to inform their clients of software updates which becomes available from time to time and not let the clients call up to ask about it. There is bound to be costs involved in software development, services fees etc which is being past down to the customer, these should be reasonably priced but not exorbitantly expensive. I also explained that things like GPS maps nowadays are not developed in house but through collaboration with dedicated map makers, for example, Garmin now use Malsingmaps, Android uses Google Maps and Holux uses Mapking and Papago Maps. The maps are already available, it just takes a simple program to re-compile them for use to their devices. Understand there is a licence cost for GPS hardware, but that is already taken car of when the Command Online is installed in the car, do not really understand the need for licence costs of maps. For the sake of comparison, I also mentioned that in, a cheap Papago GPS less than $200 to $300 provide free maps update, you don't even have to do it yourself, just bring it down to the distributor and it is a 10 minutes job. My Garmin GPS costing less than $400 provided lifetime updates online. I have given up going in for map update next week, do not want to waste more time on this. Life moves on...

My email to the management team is that they should take a leaf out of pro active customer service given by Lexus. A friend of mine is in a dispute with them on faulty parts replacement covered by warranty. They are dragging their feet to get it replaced. Good ride shitty service. A friend, who owns a pre-owned car business, had to shout them down in front of other customers to get a discount off exorbitantly priced brakes change. Can't wait to have warranty runs out then can go install what ever I want.

What a shame. Poor after sales will eventually result in falling sales, and mass exodus to PI ...

PI car if cums with original fitted COMAND (not retrofitted in Sg) will have European Maps just like PI Audis! :)

Cheers

Hmmm ... PI car with OEM touch screen, not COMAND ? ... Save 7+k / year ;)

IMHO!

Why Map Updates cost so much!

Same as MB, Audis, BMW - maybe other continental brands also! :)

Lesser car with Factory GPS in SEA, lesser demand for SEA Maps.

Lesser Demands for SEA Maps - Lesser movitation for the Mappers like Navteg & TeleAtlas to make good SEA Maps.

Lesser Demands mean Higher Price for the Map Updates unlike Maps for USA & Euro.

So end of the day blame MB for at times asking >S$12,000 for NTG 4.0 COMAND as an option.

Last time CnC was even asking for $14,000 for COMAND - so $7000 now must not complain    :)

Summore they dunno how to retrofit COMAND and if order as an option, no further discount for configurating options

So end of the day blame Audi for charging an arm and leg for their MMI Navigation

So end of the day blame BMW on their high prices for option on Navigational HU

Last but not least blame the Mappers NAVTEQ & TELEATLAS why no motivation for giving us good SEA Maps and selling it "cheap" like in USA & EURO.

How come their "expensive SEA Maps" have no postal codes unlike in Europe or USA???

KNN No motivation giving us good maps and charging so much for the map updates!!!!!

不是你錯 不是我社會的 錯

PI Car no COMAND but with after Market Multi Media Interface touch screen with Aigis Window CE base GPS Map - imho Aigis Map update not so frequent. Not happy add Garmin GPS Black box GNV53 to after market MMI gets free Garmin GPS Map updates from MalSingMaps & MalFreeMaps or donate to Jerome Wee gets life time free map updates for Johore/SG.

For after market MMI - U can add DTV, DVD Player, Game Console - all need infra red remote control to work - not so good for safety when driving

For after market MMI - they have another similar cable to sit between your LCD and HU

Before

Audio 20 HU ---> Original MB Cable --> LCD

After MMI

Audio 20 HU --> Original MB Cable --> MMI --> After Mkt MMI Cable -->LCD

In some instances the after market MMI cable causes signal resolution deteriorations.

Not all cables are made equal!

After Mkt MMI + GPS Aigis Based Map - touch screen or Garmin GVN53 GPS Blackbox (RF Remote) + DVD Player + DTV (option) + Upsize to 7" LCD Screen = $$$$ - go ask your freindly neighborhood ICE shop to quote! :)

All said - only

COMAND gives you info display on your instrument cluster - others don't.

COMAND will makes the "voice button" - Voice Comand on your steering wheel to work.

COMAND Navigation works in tunnels when satellite signals are lost  while others will annouce "Lost Satellites Reception!"

ROTARY COMAND works for all features vs only some in after mkt mmi

Steering Wheels Control works for all features vs only some in after mkt mmi

I had after market MMI in my Audi Q5 2.0 Quattro & A4 2.0 Quattro with Garmin GVN53 GPS + DTV + DVD Player + RC

I had after market MMI in my W212 E250 with Garmin GVN53 GPS + DTV + COMAND NTG 4.0 (6 pcs DVD) + Garmin Nuvi 3790V all at the same time.

Now "retired" - FL C180 COMAND NTG 4.5 (single DVD) fitted by camber 53 + hardly used Garmin Nuvi 3790V

COMAND Map updates doesn't need to go to CnC.

Our site sponsors ric_ric_lo aka Ricky and camber53 aka Gregory will charge you less than the $700 from CnC for your COMAND Maps updates.

To the site sponsors - the COMAND DVD Map updates cost them >$3000/DVD and for W204 & W212 are different DVD Maps too.

Therefore for the site sponsor to buy 2 COMAND DVD Map updates for just W204 & W212 with cost them nearly $7000.

The sifu have spoken.... and I have gained enlightenment....

Forget about spending more money for update, I have decided to live with my NTG 4.5 V4.0 SEA Map for my command online and when time comes that the maps cannot be use for its purpose anymore, I still have my trusty Garmin nuvi 52lm with lifetime maps updates as standby....

RIGHT!

I've not updated my NTG 4.5 2012 V4.0 SEA Map - Maybe next year.....maybe when they have the new EDL Highway after the MY causeway which I drive Mon to Fri every week! :)

When all things fail, I still have my Garmin Nuvi 3790V!
