Advice on tyres pls

Need some advice bros. My tyre got punctured after the wife kurbed it. Tyre shop said cannot repair cos side wall hole. I was thinking of using my spare tyre as main one (its Dunlop) and buy a cheapo tyre for the spare (after swapping rims). The tyre shop said should not use spare as the rubber is old and not safe. Is this true?

Offered to trade in to 18" rims (AMG lookalike) with 4 new brand tyres for $2000. Donno if good deal... I didn't walk into tyre shop to change rims.... just looking to repair so haven't really thought of it.

Tyre shop is right, sidewall damage would be hard to repair, even if can also would not last long. Its worthwhile to note that in UK and certain other countries it is illegal to repair sidewall damage. (google says so)

Generally we would not install a tyre which is more than 3 yrs old as the lifespan is about 5/6 years for rubbers. Meaning you are left with 2years or less to use them.

Since you are not looking to change rims then just concentrate on changing the tyre. Best would be to change all 4 , else the min is to change 2 on the same axles. Price wise you can check out online http://www.tyrepac.com/Form/B2C/home.aspx or just give a call to the many shops available locally for quotes

I would seriously advise anyone to change all 4 tyres due to the similar conditions of all tyres. I changed 2 tyres on the same axle before. Running on two new tyres with two old tyres is no joke - my entire car's handling and grip was badly affected. As the saying goes, no point scrimping on tyres when it's your car's only contact point on the road. Keep safe. Your choice.

Some people have budget leh! Thats why minimum is to change 2 on same axle... I scared some people only change one, lagi worse...

Well, I tried S$ 50/- second hand tyres before. Changed only one tyre. Frightening experience... :sick:

Why do we need to change 2 at a time. The tyre shop said change 1 only enough. The 3 other tyres are actually new no brand ones that the dealer gave. Only done about 2k on them.

So using the spare new tyre is not recommended as its about 5 years old. So I'll need to buy at least a pair of new ones.

What do you guys recommend for comfort and noise? I heard bridgestone turanza are one of the best but cannot find this size in spore (225/55/16)

Depends on how old is ur ride/age of ur tyres. One option is to get a set of 2 same tyres (trade-in tyres). The true shop will choose something closer to the current mileage of ur other tyres.

Saving $ is important, but try not to compromise on safety, the best ceramic bbk is nothing without good tyres and the only contact with the road are ur tyres. 2 cents.....

No brand tyres from the dealer? Which dealer and which tyre shop say that?

Thanks. Thats good advice... I'll see what the best value tyres are. What do you guys use and how much did you spend?

I am running on 225/55/16 Continental Premium Contact 2, my assessment after 20,000km : well balance overall performance, good dry & wet grip, good braking distance, very comfortable (stock rim) and low noise level. The first thing I changed when bought the car was to change 4 new tyres inflated with Nitrogen (~S$380/tyre in 2011). Even the best built car sits on 4 tyres, so, invest in good and safe tyres.

Just changed all 4 tires to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2. The grip is excellent in the dry and its very quiet. Steering inputs also sharper as compared to my previous PS3/CSC3.

Highly recommended to those looking to change their tires. :thumbsu:
