ok there is two choice of Garmin Nuvi

It is either the Nuvi 370 or 770

The 370 is similar to the one I have in my car.

370 (cost abt USD 360 b4 vpost cost & GST)

+Cheap, compact

-Cant save routes, nor insert multi POI in a route

770 (Cost abt USD 589 b4 vpost cost & GST)

+big screen, can save routes, insert multiple POI in a route

+Receive traffic info in Europe & UK

- Cost more, & bigger, consumes more battery

You need to also understand that the maps need to be updated. It will cost u USD75 to update each region. ie USD150 for 2 regions. This updating can be once in a long while

SG, Msia map are free courtesy of Malsingmaps.com

As the goods are bought from amazon, not much significant saving for GB except for base shipping & handling charge. I think it will cost abt SGD$50 for each box. to ship it in.. need to go check first.

I am using the Nuvi370 (this comes preloaded with original Garmin US and Europe map).

Have used in New York and New England and had proven to make driving holiday stress free.

Do note that Nuvi 300 and 600 series have flip up antenna for GPS while the newer 700 as well as the basic 200 series have built in antenna.

Previously I was using Nuvi 360 and upgraded to a Nuvi 670 within 3 weeks of the Nuvi 360.

I never leave home without it! ;D ;D ;D

Free unlocked Malaysia & SG maps from Malsingmaps used to be dated up to June 2007 nia.

Just checked their website, they have now unlocked SG & MY maps up to Jan 2008.

There could be some sort of recent policy changes that they opened up to free unlocked maps for Jan 2008. Not bad! ;D

The latest maps locked are dated March 2008.

For Malsingmap, they dun wanna your money but your contibutions to the maps for eg. error reporting, POIs, etc, they give U unlock codes

to their locked maps.

I contributed 3 times before to Malsingmap and they have given me their unlock codes for up to Feb 2008 maps when I last requested for them in Feb 2008.

Jerome Wee - Malsingmap mapper for SG & Johore has his own website

http://gpsmaps.jwpixs.com/

If U contribute a "small monetary token" in "appreciation of his work" he might give U the unlock codes to your Garmin GPSr (ID #) for all future new maps of SG & Johore. His latest map are dated 23rd Mar 2008 for SG & Johore.

I believe the Nuvi 770 is preloaded with US and Europe maps. My suggestion is buy the model that suits your travel pattern; get one with one map preloaded if you are not travelling to US or Europe and it should be cheaper. To get the price lower, go for a smaller screen Nuvi 300 series if you can manage the view (some prefer bigger view).

Of course, the kiasu way is to go for both maps (I bought 370 with 2 maps). Unfortunately, ordering from Amazon now will not be in time for the Penang trip unless you buy it off the shelf in Singapore.

here's the list of shops fished out from Malsing forum;

I even attempted cartography by drawing a Batam Island GPS map.

The 1st SGMerc driveaway to Malacca last year,

my GPSr was telling me we have arrived at the hotel from SG

but the rest of the kakies were still infront circling around looking for the hotel. ;D.

Go buy the Nuvi 770, dun like it, sell it to me for my upgrade. ;)

Uncle Batam is a firm believer of Garmin.....and me too (I have threw out my road directory too) ;D

I am waiting for the launch of Garmin GPS phone in Q3 of this year. Just wonder if it is good enough to replace my hp and Nuvi because the website shows it to be quite a good piece.

bro protoss, no need to buy liow. new car can install built-in gps liow. hahahaha

IMHO,

A GPSr is as good as how accurate and the the latest of the maps available.

Many OEM GPSr seems to have problem or cost when come to updating of maps.

Currently all SG & MY free unlocked maps is latest Jan 2008 from Malsingmaps.

Locked Maps latest version is Mar 2008.

There's almost an update every 4 to 6 weeks for SG map.

After using the Garmin for > 1year, to me it's an excellent product that serve my purpose.
