Hi Bro,

It's difficult to tell what version MB has installed in your Comand when shipped out the Car. As we have found that some CLS W218 shipped to Hong Kong with S.E.A Map V.3 but now the latest one is S.E.A. Map V.5 for W212/W218 series NTG4.

Thus, it's been quite sure that you have to buy a PIN from Mercedes to get your R172 (NTG4.5), W204 FL (NTG4.5), W221 FL (NTG3.5) update even you have got the latest DVD map on hands. After you insert the map DVD, Comand will ask you to input a 6 digits PIN to proceed ahead the map update. Therefore, the cost of updating the map will be much expenisve than before as C&C also needs to pay the PIN cost to Mercedes as whenever they get the PIN from the system, the system will bill them automatically.

Similar practice has been carrying out by BMW CIC map update as well.

Cheers, Ricky

So that's mean you guys unable update the map for anyone here?? Meaning there is a possbility C&C will refuse to update map if set are not purchase from them!!

Here's another update from me:

MB Sg wrote to me on Facebook asking me to channel my problem with COMMAND to [email protected]

I just did that.

Here's what I wrote:

Hi

I write to express my disappointment with COMMAND's navigation system. It simply cannot do the most basic task: to find my home address.

I collected my C180 Kompressor last Saturday (24 September). During the handover, my SE demonstrated the use of COMMAND's navigation system. He tried to find my home address with the postal code search function. To my surprise, the system couldn't find it. I returned a few days later. This time, a more senior SE tried to help me, but to no avail. He had to concede there are limitations to COMMAND navigation system. This is unbelievable. My previous car is Nissan Latio Sport, which came with a built-in navigation system. I had no problem looking up any address in Singapore.

I really hope your management will look into this matter. It is ludicrous that the navigation system of a premium Continental car brand pales in comparison with that of a basic Japanese car.

Let's see what they say. Will keep you guys posted.

We can get the PIN from different channel but it will cost more for the map update compared against NTG4.

Yes, C&C not likely help you to update the map even you pay for the PIN if the Comand retrofit by other installer. Thus, seems no one will go back to C&C to pay more for the map update if the Comand installed by the installer.

Hi bros

Any idea is there an over-ride function (software) to continue to watch DVD when the car moves >5km/h? Intend to use it for my child to watch DVD (apart from passing him my IPAD) =)

cheers!

Cheers!

IMHO,

There's nothing wrong with the Comand System!

It's a very exciting piece of equipment with many other features beside Navigation.

To me I awlays tell people that your GPS is as good as your map.

The S.E.A Maps is not as good as your Garmin based maps or even Aigis Maps.

To TeleAtlas, providing a S.E.A Map is "not economical" as the number of MB rides with Comand System is "limited" probably due to the earlier exhorbitant costs" as an option by MB dealers (>S$12000 option).

That also explain the cost of a S.E.A Maps DVD is a few S$ '000 as compared to a few USD$ '00 or EUR '00 for US Maps or Esuropean Maps.

Let's "hope" there will be more Comand users in S.E.A and TeleAtlas is "more motivated economically" to produce much detail maps for S.E.A.

IIRC the S.E.A maps cannot search 6 digit postal codes as compared to the US Maps with 7 digit postal quotes.

Sad to say, imho not many SEs are evn their Snrs are technically well informed to teach U the use of the Comand. Maybe all these years not many cars delivered by CnC comes with Comands. Even those came with Comand were restricted to NTG 2.0 , 2.5, 3.0 and only the last few years with NTG 4.0 and now the latest NTG 4.5.

If U need to know how to use your Comand, join us at our meetups!

Like bro DES said, it's called VIM. I had a kufatec VIM installed not too long ago. It's supposed to be the best in the market, but sadly it didn't suit me. While the DVD played perfectly on the move, it kept interfering with the navigation & screwing up my nav display on the the instrument cluster. After 2 weeks of use, I decided that my nav is more important than DVD display & had the VIM removed. You have to decide which is more important before getting it.
