1990-93/94 300CE-24 - M104 6 cyl 24 valve engine (217hp)

These are creamy bulletproof engines but here are the issues you may experience as with most MBs of this age.

Loud tapping caused by the hydraulic lifters can be solved by using a thicker grade of engine oil.

Check to see if the fan has been replaced previously.

Post 1990 models (maybe 92 onwards) suffer from degradable wiring loom insulation problems (same as the just b4 mid 90s W124,W140).

Flushing the engine oil may not be a wise option as any sludge or particles that are lodged out of place by the engine flush solution in a car of this age may cause potential blockage and damage the engine.

The 300CE-24 was a favourite candidate for the mosselman turbo conversion kit. If it was fitted in its previous life, be prepared for potential overhaul.

This is a very good link with information on M103/M104 engines and additional items to look out for -

Mercedes 6cyl engines of that time also had rather weak headgaskets. A top overhaul if not already done, will need doing. Also check all the electrics and make sure it is working... sunroofs are a pain to fix as the cable stretches through alot of unreachable areas of the car and are difficult to remove if it disintegrates inside the housing. Also make sure that the extendable seatbelt thingies are working as well as they are costly to replace. However almost all the parts for C124, S124 and W124s are still easily available from most mercedes stockists. Overall they are gorgeous pillarless coupes from an era where build quality is still unmatched even till today.

P.S

Is your friends car the one with period correct Brabus rims by any chance?
