Mod 1 : GPS tracker

Mod 2 : Steering Wheel Bar Lock

I've been visiting Malaysia very often.

Usually travel in convoy of friends.

Furthest is KL.

Never have I fear car kena stolen or lost.

Year 2013, start to make lone trips in.

Happened on 1 trip, found multiple 2 inch screws on my left rear tyres.

Managed to drive all the way back to Singapore than realised it.

Tyre shop says ... somebody did it on purpose due to the angle it was inserted.

Mind you, I always stay in min. 4 stars hotels.

Hotels with tight entrance n exit.

Just recently, news of a Honda Stream kena stolen in JB freaked me out.

Don't know why ... maybe feeling old liao.

To drive the fear away ... managed to source few companies offering GPS tracking but :

1. Costly to install

2. Costly to maintain monthly

3. Have to use their software

Found the perfect item recently, tested n yeah !!!

Best of it ... just use google map n you can see your car location.

Will be providing updates after I come back safely from Malaysia this weekend.

Wish me luck for this virgin field test.

Finally ... back in SG

Safe n sound

As mentioned ... the updates

1st up ... Steering Wheel Bar Lock

Have read abt how a steering wheel bar lock will deter car thieves.

Almost borrowed a 'baseball' style steering bar lock.

But in the end, found this simple, sturdy bar lock.

Key looks complicated to be duplicated though ...

Cost : Less than S$30 inclusive of freight

Where to buy : http://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.4.YKw9vf&id=38817759752&ns=1&abbucket=2

Understand there are lots of it there ... different types ... different suppliers ... different prices.

But i just go with the one where most frequent.

Next up ... GPS tracker

So what you need?

1. GPS tracker

2. SIM card

For me, i use mobileshare plan from Singtel as it tags along the plan as my main mobile line.

This 'sub-line' cost monthly est. S$10.

You will be given another mobile number and sim card.

Device accept 2FF but can use 4FF with 2FF adapter, so no worries.

Note : Activate caller ID for this 'sub-line' (i think this will cost additional S$5).

How it works?

I've hooked up / hard wire the device to the car's wiring so that it will charge the device whenever it's on the move.

I have to hide the device so that it's off the eyes of car thieves.

Where to hide? Cannot say ... heh heh heh

But it better be somewhere it has the least blockage from the sky coz it functions by means of GPS locating.

To know where your car ... just call

A SMS with google map link will be send to your mobile.

I can't just be always calling ya ... especially when i sleep, right?

You can set a perimeter to the device.

Once the device is out of the perimeter, constant SMSes will be sent to your mobile.

Accuracy of device?

Location is very accurate when it's on the move.

Stationary accuracy is est. 15 m ~ 30 m.

How long can device survive without charging?

So far, 3 days max.

By the 2nd day, it will start to send SMSes to you informing low batt.

So, you have min. 2 days to track n find your car.

Another way to counter is to connect it to a power bank n power bank to charging system (haven't tried).

So i know my car is in some unauthorised's hands ... what should i do?

1. Call police

2. Hail a cab and trail it

Above are just some basic functions of the device.

Device can even switch to audio mode.

Instead of sending SMSes, device treat itself like another phone.

You call, device answer, you can hear what's talking inside the car (eavesdropping).

These are the SMSes device sent to me when I'm Malaysia.
