I think the R4 is just a general designation for 4 cyl engines. If you look at previous Mercedes engine codes dating back to 1995, the M102 also has the R4 prefix. All Mercedes-Benz 4 cyl engines are straight 4 configurated.

R4 - 4 cyl, V6 - 6 cyl, V8 - 8 cyl etc

Hi :welcome: to the forum

from what i know,

In automotive design, an R4, or Rear-engine, Four-wheel drive layout places the engine at the rear of the vehicle and drives all four wheels. This layout is typically chosen to improve the traction or the handling of existing vehicle designs using the RR layout.

MB lineup are mostly FR

The straight-4 engine is a four cylinder internal combustion engine with all four cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankcase. The single bank of cylinders may be oriented in either a vertical or an inclined plane with all the pistons driving a common crankshaft. This straight engine configuration is the most common in cars with a displacement up to 2.4 litres.

MB current straight-4/inline-4(I4/L4) engine is M271, which is a 1.8 L (1796 cc) version.

so care to tell me, which model are you talking about?

Cheers!! :punk1:
