In short, the answer is "it depends on what you will be servicing."

There is a thread here that will give you some idea of the servicing charges and the type of servicing:

http://www.sgmerc.com/topic/10262-servicing-mercedes/

For a 7 yr car, you will be servicing quite a few parts, the easy way to budget is to add $3K to the cost of the car for servicing and you won't feel that much pain. :)

Usually engine and gearbox is not a problem but other things spoil or not looking good.

a)  Headlight turns dull - S$250 ea if halogen bulb, if active dynamic HID headlight, S$960 ea

B)  Aircon coil will leak, either you get hit or previous owner

c)  Engine mounting, if steering vibrate during idle, one side S$120, you need both.

d)  Steering leather peel, re-wrapping S$250

e)  Power steering leak or whining when turning, change power steering pump S$680

f)   Radiator leak, this one will depends if your genuine mileage exceeds 250,000km, cheap S$280, but to remove it is a nightmare.

g)  Supercharger whine, but problem is not supercharger, it is the pulleys that runs the belt, so change all the ldler pulleys (2pcs).

h)  Check engine light appears, rubber hose leak due to micro cracks.  Can't see which one, you have to figure out.

I)  Shock absorber may be worn, you have to feel for yourself

j)  Undercarriage lower ball joint and front control arm worn out, will cause rattling when running over rough surface

k)  Anti roll bar , S$120 cheap but to remove it takes 3 hours

These are the problems you will face running a old W211 E200K. If previous owner had done some of it, you are left with a lesser parts to take care of.

Choose wisely.....

Hi Good morning Rocknroll,

I am just being honest to people who may not be expecting what they are getting into.  I am new to this forum but certainly not new to Mercedes.  Most people today found that Japanese cars are rather costly especially the used ones and so they thought why not buy a conti make. But the strength of Japanese car is they hold they value because minimal repairs.

Mercedes spare parts are relatively cheap and easy to source for replacement parts.  Many after market brands to choose from and quite a number of workshops can repair them.  I find the weakest part of W211 E200 models are their engine mountings, 3 years change one round, undercarriage parts, also 3 years change one round and finally supercharged engine rubber pipes.  All these sounds scary as you said, but they are quite cheap. It is the trouble to sent to workshops and have the car down.

Owners will have to decide how well they can tolerate paying to maintain the car. For me, nothing short of new car standard. So little small noises does irritates me. Everything must be working even on a 8th or 7th year old car.

Coming back to your W212, I believe your undercarriage design has been simplified compare to the older model which runs double wishbone suspension, while your car runs on single lower arm, MacPherson struts. So you have half the components to take care of.....Regards,

Mee too, even my W211 is turning 8 years young, I make sure not a single noise. To me, undercarriage/suspension/wheels are important, it gives you the Mercedes "butt" feel.

Undercarriage noise make the car feels "old".

For used W211, my heart goes to E240 V6.  The engine is smooth and due to its higher OMV, the scrap is higher.  Their selling price could be about the same as E200 (because E240 road tax higher, so not popular).  The annual running cost could be about even and you enjoy V6 smoothness.

Great to read how you guys upkeep your merc. Am learning a lot since I bought mine, and I am a sucker for a good merc maintenance story. It feels great to be "involved" with the experience of owning a merc and maintaining it at tip-top condition. Am so hooked on the creamy engine sound and "gliding" across a well-paved road. Hopefully when my car reaches 8~9 years, it will still be as good as it is today. Scheduled down-time is fine with me, but unscheduled visit to workshops is a definite no-no.

BTW, CarCrazy, can you share where you usually do your maintenance/service, especially those you mentioned above? If not convenient to post, can PM me. Thanks!

Hi ,

Sure can share. Do note that W212 parts are more expensive than W211. Spare part prices drop as the model gets older.

Quite a few shops in Sin min area can do Mercedes other than those well known specialist.

For normal service I usually go to the shop at Sing Min block 7, 2nd last shop ( last shop also belongs to them), you can drive there to see their name. Efficient, fast and reasonable price. No bookings needed.

For aircon problems, also sin min block 7, 5th shop from the start, Motoaire aircon, green signboard. Pretty honest and fast.

Hopes it helps...BTW, where do you service your ride?

CarCrazy, thanks for sharing. So far I have only brought my car to C n C for carrot chop. Reason is because I am new to merc and want to know what AD servicing is like, so that I can have a measuring stick for future maintenance services. When the car gets older, I would bring it to outside workshop. My experience at C n C has been good so far, but they overcharge a lot for parts. And I don't trust them to change small parts or make detail diagnosis.
