JOHOR BARU - A Singaporean businessman led police on a 20km car chase when he tried to flee after failing to bribe them.

He was later caught.

In the 11.30pm incident on Sunday, the 50-year-old suspect, driving a Mercedes Benz, was headed to Singapore when he tried to cut the vehicle queue at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex (CIQ), obstructing other vehicles in the process.

When two police traffic officers on duty at the CIQ complex tried to take him to the nearest police station, the man got agitated and refused to cooperate with them.

He then offered the officers a RM550 (S$213.50) bribe. When they refused, the suspect drove off.

"We were waiting for assistance before sending him to the nearby Central police station, but the suspect decided to speed off in his car," said officer Awang Mohd Massahdi Awang Abunawas, one of the two on duty.

The police gave chase and the 20-minute pursuit took them all the way to Taman Sri Putri in Skudai, about 20km away, before they caught up with the suspect and arrested him.

The suspect was remanded for four days, which ends today. The case is being investigated under Section 186/214 of the Penal Code. He faces a two-year jail sentence if found guilty.

The two officers who refused the bribe were given commendation certificates yesterday.

I use the causeway almost everyday Mon to Fri.

See lots of impatient sg drivers wanting to cut Q or dun give way and a few secs more seems so important to them.

Dun understand why this guy turn back to jay bee.

Maybe he should hoot back across the causeway! :)

Cheers
