Why fastfood free-flow drinks won't work

Wed Jun 25 2008

Mr Ronnie Poon Beng Choon

my paper

This family of four at a fastfood outlet ordered only one cup for drinks which they shared, and later filled their water bottles with the drinks.

The letter on the ugly behaviour of supermarket customers (my paper, June 24) reminded me of an incident which I witnessed over the weekend.

I was at a fastfood outlet in Kallang and the order of a set meal came with an empty cup which diners could fill up with their chosen soft drinks at the automatic drinks dispenser.

The diners were entitled to refills and there were no restrictions on the number of times the diners could refill their cups, as long as they consumed the drinks within the outlet.

The first thing that surprised me when I was at the outlet was that some diners would refill their cups to the brim while on their way out. I guess that’s what it means by best value for money.

However, what took the cake was a family of four which ordered a fairly big meal but with only one cup for drinks which they shared among themselves.

Then, they made multiple trips to the dispenser and poured the contents from the cup into four empty, one-litre bottles for “takeaways”.

Times may be bad and prices of many things are going in the opposite direction in the stock markets.
