W126 DIY door mirror replacement

Did this earlier today to replace my two spoiled mirrors (left side one plastic gear broke thus cannot adjust in/out and glass heavily pitted; right side is mounting broken thus cannot be adjusted, glass heavily pitted and cracked) after 24yrs of service!

Procedures for both sides are the same except for the driver side, you have to remove the plastic adjustment handle by opening the door and then use a flat tip screwdriver to push on the ribbed portion and slide it towards the right:

Once that's done, you can pull off the handle and also the locking lever:

It's intuitive once you see it for yourself!

To remove any of the door mirrors, you have to pry off the black triangular plastic trim piece. It is held in place by a tab near the top. I used 3 credit cards to push under the trim to pop it off. Once that's done, you will see that the door is held in place by 3 screws:

This shows the passenger side mirror which also has the heater/electrical connection. Just loosen the screw on the socket and disconnect.

You should brace the mirror when removing the last screw in case it just drops off:

Yuck...all the old bits of foam.

I cleaned both sides as best as I could:

Re-install in reverse and voila!

Ignore the mismatched mirror backing cover. It has been hidden by the chrome covers I got off eBay smil3dbd4d4e4c4f2.gif

A comparison between the old and new mirror assembly:

Pretty decent for Euro59!

Hope this simple guide helps those who have issues with their mirrors and would like to change them out! :)

Thanks. Just a simple job that can be done in an hour or so. Save some money from not going to the workshop plus bonding with the car :)
