Which/What Repair Manual to Buy?

Hello all,

I have owned my 200E for two weeks.

Last week, I removed my RR door trim to try to repair my power window. Had a hard time removing the trim (the problem with this car is that I don't know when to pull, which direction to lift and if there is any hidden screw). Once the door card was out, I was stumped because I did not know how to remove the PW motor and regulator (to see if they can be revived). Bought a new set of motor/regulator to replace as it is easier to do so rather than taking out the old set intact.

Two days ago, I tried to change my rear brake pads. Removed the caliper from the mounting and found that I could not get the two pins out of the way to remove the pads. Tried to loosen two bolts on the caliper but brake fluid leaked out... Fixed back everything except the new pads :( The rotors need changing too.

2 hours of hard labour wasted.

Yesterday, I tried to change my monowiper assembly (old one lost its telescopic function). Managed to take out the wiper assembly but could not change to new one because the long piece of rubber weather strip that runs along the bottom of the windscreen would not come out of the wiper... Fixed back everything except the new assembly. Broke the rubber insulator piece in the bonnet :(

3 hours of hard labour wasted...

Now, do any of you own any workshop manual that teaches us how to do all these things? I look at the engine bay and I cannot identify 95% of the visible components. It would be good if the manual shows us most of the user repairable parts. I'd like to be able to replace thermostat and any relays that go bonkers.

Which manual should I go for? Haynes book or CD repair manual? If it is the latter, which CD do you all recommend? Thank you in advance. :hail:

I'm in KL now (drove the 200E for the first time up north), so could not attend the La Kopi session.

Hi the folks here hardly DIY on repair. Is better that you search for other Mercedes website for technical advise.

Hard also lah . Majority are too pampered to hands on lah . Not much ppl technical know how . Mostly technical know how to pay mechanics only . I'm one of them for sure .

It looks like it. But surely a service manual comes in handy? There are many simple things to DIY which save us money and give us satisfaction - if we succeed in doing it. I guess the non-DIY culture can also be attributed to more people owning new cars: owners cannot see what is done to their cars, let alone learn from the mechanics. And staying in condos and HDB flats does not help too.

No wonder I am unable to find any Haynes manual in our local bookstores.

Yup, have been searching online for the advice - or else I wouldn't even know how to start taking apart the door card. Some advice is not so clear, so a detailed manual would come in handy.

Looks like I have to start looking for the Haynes manual to buy online, and whatever CD version I can find. The local bookstores don't seem to have them so I am unable to determine which manual is suitable for me. Hence, I started this thread to ask for opinion on which manual to get.

  • 2 years later...

It's been a while since you posted I am now trying to get my hands on a Haynes.

I intend to replace the front wheel bearings along with brake pads and rotors.

There's enough info on youtube but feel I need a Haynes as a reliable fallback.
