The new car sales figures in Singapore for January 2011 has been released, with Toyota hanging on to top spot in the face of strong sales by the European makes

Toyota remains the top seller in January 2011, with 510 cars sold, but Volkswagen managed a strong second place, with 504 units shifted, a mere six cars behind. German premium brands Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi claimed 3rd to 5th spots, with 332, 198 and 138 cars sold respectively.

A major surprise was Porsche, with the Stuttgart sports car maker selling 97 cars in January to come in seventh place, ahead of the likes of Korean makes Hyundai and Kia, which tallied 81 and 75 cars in eighth and ninth spot.

Other sports car makers also did well, with Ferrari shifting 14 cars and Maserati selling 10, placing them ahead of Mazda, which sold 10 cars, and budget brands Proton, Perodua and Chery, who only managed to tally single digits each for the month of January.

The trend of luxury and high-end makes outselling mainstream carmakers can be attributed to the reduction in COE quota, and subsequent spike in COE prices. The trend is expected to continue for the rest of the year, with COE quotas expected to remain at current levels for the foreseeable future.
