Hi

I'm interested in getting a Merc V6 as I'm sick of my current underpowered 4-potter 320XL. So I am attracted to these 2 options here-

2006 CLK 280

http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=130677&DL=1000

2008 C230

http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=128605&DL=1213

Am aware that both rides above are not the same category but just keeping my options open. The CLK 280 is a PI car that's been souped up by the current owner who seems to be a car lover. The C230 is a C&C 'mgmt car'.

Wonder if any forumer here has any info abt the cars. Any views/inputs/advice are also most welcome! Thanks in advance!

Think very much depends on your life style!

There's another one on the mkt to consider - C280

10-Jul-2008 C280 3L 7g tronics

or U wanna "effortless" faster ride & if it's within your budget - here's another one - 2010 C350

Thanks for the quick reply and helpful info on the other 2 cars:) But keeping to the my 2 choices for the moment. For the cabrio, my concern is whether the retractable hood and engine upgrades done will pose any maj probs in future.. also, as it's a PI car, resale value is expectedly lower but wonder if it's gonna fall to pit bottom value just becos it's not AD car regardless of condition (assuming good). If so, I should just stick to C&C cars. For C230, it'd be a switch to another 4-door albeit of better engine.

Views anyone pl? Thanks!

Hi spidey,

Whether PI or C&C i think at the end of the day is the paper value of the car that matters (OMV n COE)........

Retractable hood and engine wont have any issue in future but also depends on what mods that has been done to it........

Maybe change to a Topless ride might not be a bad idea after all as your current ride roof cant open. If wanna change then change something different (of course budget must allow too).

if not you can always try a 335i convertible or coupe or sedan (306hp and 400nm) should be fast enough or A5 cabrio.....

Go do a test drive and have a first hand experience on which variant suit you best.

go with your heart...

Happy searching

vroom vroom

cheers

Not sure if the V6 are suitable candidates. You might want to consider test driving the kompressor / new CGI turbo version instead. More urgency and torque to begin with.

Hi thanks again to all for the useful views!

Hmm, now I'm wondering if I should drop V6 since it seems to lack torque. Don't want my next drive to feel smooth in acceleration but overweight at pickup..

The C230 has the Dynamic Handling feature which I'm not sure the CLK has- impt to me too as quite used to current ride's handling (only thin I can sing abt).

Maybe 325 cabrio or A5 TSFI coupe should be considered too then.. ?

Hi Spidey,

no worries on the torque lacky portion as the V6 3L is 300nm.......(already got G-force when you pull).

A5 Cabrio is gooooood. New design plus it is AWD and can still MtMed tune...lolz

E93 325i abit too heavy as it is a hard-top, torque sure suffer

Hi. I'm biased towards the CLK. Performance-wise, the 1.8 SC can be uprated to around 290+NM and 230+HP. That's pretty punchy performance. Lookin at the cost-benefit ratio, IMHO the few $Ks spent is bang for the buck instead of pouring out alot more moolah to get a slightly larger engine with only marginal performance. Unless of course you're going for a massive monster under the hood.

Handling-wise, the stock CLK is not too shabby. It'll match a Beemer 9 tenths of the time until/unless you go loco behind the wheels. The 320 is a very nicely balanced ride with crisp handling which is hard to beat. But the CLK looks way better ;-)

Hi Longshanks,

May i know how you transform M271 engine 1.8L (FL:184hp and 250nm, pre-FL 163hp n 240nm) to around 290+NM and 230+HP???

install K-Box, Kleemann down-pipe plus C230 SC???

cheers

yup, maybe got to bore the cylinder head of the 4 cyc for bigger compression ratio.

plus K-Box, header/down-pipe, exhaust and a much better SC and also change the torque convertor too....last but not least add-in a bigger intercooler then " maybe " got some hope la......

cheers

Hi. Referring to the 184hp variety. The usuals: K Box, Vaeth intercooler, 230 SC, pulleys, header, downpipe and muffler. Figs before drivetrain loss, certainly not at wheel. And at least on paper. There's quite a difference in output compared to a stock 184hp.

But agree, no replacement for displacement. Also, the smoothness of a larger cc-ed engine e.g. V6 is hard to beat.

The problem with mods, as most would agree, is that it's usually not only the end results but the journey there that counts. Many among us would admit not matter what the base model purchased, the itch will inevitably set in.. :becky:
