Any recommendation of quiet tires suitable for B170?

IMHO,

The "quietest" premium tyres are Bridgestone Touranza GR90

These tyres were launched earlier this year.

I am on my 3rd set of GR90.

1st set was on my Audi A4 2.0TFSI

The 2nd & 3rd set was/is(changed rims from 17" to 18") on my E250cgi.

They are not "cheap" lol!

Unker, what's the rough price for a set of 19's? Which shop has good prices for these? How's the comfort level? Time to change my tyres.

Low profile tyres are usually not quiet

Quiet tyres usually do not have low profile.

Bridgestone KNN knows there is a niche market for low profile & quietness.

This GR90 are very comfortable & quiet but I m told not much cheaper than say Michelin PS2, PP2 or Goodyear F1.

Prices I dun really find out cos every time I lan lan trade in the stock tyres.

I usually get my tyres from South East Tyres.

Know the Bros (Ah Ho & Ah Ming) >20 years since their early days in Marine Terrace.

hows the grip ah

WRONG!

My Front GR90 are 245/40/18 & Rear 265/35/18.

No bigger than 225 arh!

U wanna 275 or not....muahahaha!:becky:

Unker used to blindly believe in "branded products".

Asked Ah Ho of South East Tyres - "Are Michelin Tyres Good?"

His reply was "If Michelin Tyres are no good, then what tyres are good?"

Then I asked him again - "What low profile tyres are the quietest?"

His reply was "Bridgestone Touranza GR 90!"

Unker sound like PR spokeman for Bridgestone....hahaha!:becky:

Bro Funng listened to me and he's happily statisfied with the GR 90 on his FL W211 and some other chaps on the VAGSG forum too.

IMHCCBO - Dun look down on smlc Bridgestone Brand arh!

What grip - I don't do tracking or cheong B-Roads - so normal driving or raining conditions - swee swee boh chow chwee lah!

Last Jun - Went up with AA to P Redang and went up the East Coast with then 245/45/17 GR90 on stock rims.

Never once on the 1500km trip, I felt I was losing traction on the tyres!

GR90 sizes start from 14" to 19"

Here are 17" to 19" sizes

any bro here had tried PS3?

i m thinking of changing it to tis.......

btw my ride is w211...18" 245/40 and 265/35

im running PS3,

grip is better (by miles than CSC3)

about same as P zero rosso but much much quieter

however, note that there are two countries in which PS3s are made.

Hungary and Thailand. Need to say which is better (:

Thai factory makes most sizes.

Difference is in the load index and possibly compound itself.

hungary made PS3s have a much higher load index

Aspec DBs may not be a good choice - like skates on ice... pretty poor grip. You'll probably slide right off a wet car park ramp if you go slow enuff.

Goodyear F1 Asymmetric has got excellent grip on both wet and dry tarmacs. The feel is crisp. Tire noise ain't that loud (to my non-audiophile ears..). A tad bit of noise is a small price to pay for a prodigious grip, IMHO.

There could be some truth to the concerns over the quality of rubbers coming out of Thailand. From experience, Goodyear's GSD3s can vastly vary in grip depending where it is manufactured. The Thai ones, which cost marginally less, were alarmingly slick, often losing grip in the wet. Dem Deutsche ones, h/ever, lived up to promise. On checking with Goodyear on why the massive quality inconsistency, the reply was that the Thai-manufactured ones were "engineered for Asian conditions". Apparently, the compound used had not too subtle differences.

The other thing is most western tire reviewers review Euro-made rubbers, not Asian manufactured ones. So a 2 thumbs up very likely refers to the conti manufactured ones.

No disrespect intended to our Thai friends, fans or forummers.

These tires I have tried and a short comment. They are not tested by me scientifically and they are just my personal opinion. You can google for other reviews too.

1) Conti CSC2 - Performance in dry and wet is above average but price is way above average. A little noisy but rubber life is very good. It came stock with my car and lasted about 25,000 km before change. It's the standard I gauge for the following tires :

2) GoodYear Revspec RS-02 - Made in Japan but reasonable priced. The quietest tire period. Comfy too. My B class felt like a real merc (calm and butter smooth like it's more expensive siblings). Performance in dry is as good as CSC2 but average in the wet. Alas the good times only lasted about 4 month (about 12,000km) as it wears fast and after that it became noisy and performance drops dramatically.

3) Falken ST115 - Made in Japan, looks good though quite old in design. I got a 05 tire thanks to a dishonest dealer. Very stable and performance is better than CSC2 in all aspect especially in the wet due to the wide drain channels. Noise is average and ride is a little harsher. Despite the higher TPI / TWR (tire wear rating) of 360, it wears fast (not as fast as revspec).

4) Goodyear F1 Asymmetric - Can't remember where is was made but 3 months in usage, I find it is the most balanced tires compared with above. Performance wise is just below the Falken. Tire wear seems to be good after 5000km. Comfortable and quiet (not as quiet as a new RevSpec when new though). The only downside seems to be higher rolling resistance as i feel acceleration is not as fast as the ST115 - need further testing with higher pressure. Looks like a keeper for me.

Fyi, I love driving my B class and travel quite a bit especially on NS highway. I find tires behave differently with tire pressure. You have to feel and adjust accordingly for different types of road you are traveling. The rubber is the only thing between you and the road.

I'm running on the stock tyres for about a year plus (B170). Considering to replace the tyres without changing the rims and require quieter tyres. Is the GR90 still my best bet?

thanks

IMHO,

If U dun track and or cheong B roads, the GR90 is one of the most "comfortable" & ultra quiet tyres on the market.

If U want "Performance" - "Grip" , then go for PS3

My B170 is already done 25k km and one year plus just reach half way marks yet on its original tyre. I think time to change is thread thickness less than 2mm??

pai seh..what are B roads? And any idea where is cheapest place to get the GR90?

B Roads are usually trips made by various car clubs up North to Malaysia.

Even our SGMerc members had organized a few B roads event in the past!

U may search this forum and you might still find some of the videos taken.

Instead goin on the Highways - like the North South Highway, they take the "smaller roads" known as B roads & cheong at whatever speed they can!

They are usually well organized by experienced organizers, newbies are usually well briefed, walkie talkie is a must with convoy leader & sweeper.

Back to the tyres

Feb this year, I traded in my oem Pirelli P7 on my new Audi A4 to GR90 245/40/18 from South east Tyres. The P7 imho grips very well but hellavu "noisy"

3 mths back, I got my GR 90 245/45/17 again from South East Tyres - traded in my W212 oem Pirelli P7.

I recently upgraded my rims to 18" and traded in my oem 17" rims/GR 90 tyres for the 18" rims at Leong Seng with new GR90 245/40/18 Front & 265/35/18 rear.

IMHO

All these years there were no low profile that are "quiet"

Quiet tyres have no low profile range!

Until Bridgestone came out with the Touranza GR series.

The GR90 was launched early this year after the GR80.

They are imho not "cheap tyres" and they appropriately

market it as Comfort Premium Tyres.
