Is it hard to find spares for engine repairs?? Let say I blown my engine will it be difficult to find a 2nd hand replacement??

Sorry for the question...still new to Benz...used to own a bimmer. :becky:

car is rather new in the market, no problems with spare parts... merc engine not so easy piang lah.. unless you drive it extremely very day!

thanks for the info...I think the in line 4 shld be quite common n fairly cheap in the half cut mkt.

The reason i ask is cuz i hav an itchy hand for modding cars :becky:

I didnt know that R171 is rather new...in mkt for 4 yrs or more rite?? I particularly like this design...quite excited actually...never this excited when collecting all my former rides before :becky:

Hi Eric,

when you buy a new SLK then of course is rather new...........but???

this SLK (R171) design is since 2004 and it was being face lifted in 08................so it has been around for almost a good 6 years already.......

maybe your C class.........

Hi Mercz,

Yes Eric was right Merc engine no so easily blown unless you decided repalce the SC with a twin turbo.............confirm blow............

why not get a SLK200 that is already fully done-up? from exterior to interior and under the bonnet???

R171 variant is since 2004 so it is going to be 6 years old but it is still a nice roadster...

yeah, of coz i know about all the different facelift... ;)

alvin, when i mentioned "new" i actually meant that it is not an obselete model that parts are not easy to find.. for example, Toyota MRS... you can't find simple thing like strut bars in Singapore...

thats comforting to hear.

Actually its still quite easy to find strut bars for MRS in spore (few more yrs later will be hard liao)...brand new...a few workshops still specialise in that model car. I use to drive one.

Cuz any engine subjected to heavy compression force higher than its stock rate will normally wear out faster. So my concern is if i will to SC to higher rate i.e. Kleemann and the engine life shorten n give me some problem...e.g. oil leak, loss of compression. I can juz swop to another In-line 4.

happy struting.....

All SLK200s are supercharged; those with larger engines are NA. In fact, almost all 4 pot engines from Merc use forced induction (SC for SLK & C-Class, Turbocharging for A/B/E Class).

Why not just pick up a 350 right from the start? unless you want to mod for mod sake. Risking a blown engine n shopping for half-cuts doesn't make sense if u can just top up abtut n get 272bhp.

Drawbacks on the SLK that I can think of:

1. 2 seats only

2. no iPod connectivity (2004-07)

3. small boot opening when roof is down

4. Steering feel not great

5. Boot too narrow for golf driver

6. Antenna can potentially poke ur eyes

but I love my SLK!

Drawbacks on the SLK that I can think of:

1. 2 seats only - no choice all roadster all are 2 seaters

2. no iPod connectivity (2004-07) - buy the new Z4 , it has got the ipod thingy

3. small boot opening when roof is down - all roadtser same same

4. Steering feel not great - get the Z4 or Boxster or Cayman (steering are great)

5. Boot too narrow for golf driver - that's so true

6. Antenna can potentially poke ur eyes - time to change to shorter antenna ya

I loved to mod cars (itchy hands)...in fact most cars need to be mod to drive comfortably...juz a matter of how much.

getting a 350 up right will means paying more for insurance n rd tax. In the long run prob cost u more than u mod car. I used to pay about 6K+ per yr for rd tax + insu for my fairlady...sold it off after close to 2 yrs..cuz I see no point paying so much to govt.

1. 2 seats only - theres always taxi !

2. no iPod connectivity (2004-07) - not an impt issue for me

3. small boot opening when roof is down - much much better than my MRS!

4. Steering feel not great - too heavy??

5. Boot too narrow for golf driver - as long can fit a few stuff ok liao

6. Antenna can potentially poke ur eyes - changed to short one liao

thanks for the input!!

Nice weighted feel and good feedback, definitely sharper than an Audi but presumably less so than a BMW/Porsche (which I have neither owned nor test driven).

Oh well, you can't have everything!
