Mine is an 8v. on my old 8v, it happened twice. once the radiator was leaking n i didnt know. second time, the main fan wa spoilt. might want to get that checked out. frquent overheating can lead to the cylinder heads getting warped. bad news. bad bad news.

This happens when I'm stuck in the causeway jam. Does this happens you yours? Any difference in temperature between a 8v / 16v engine? Thx :)

I think that can be normal given the conditions. Once it hits 100, your radiator fan's faster speed setting should kick in to bring down the temp. This is characterized by a louder humming sound emanating from the engine bay. The temp should then fluctuate anywhere between 90-95.

This happened to my car mid 08 due to some malfunction that melted the entire fuse, rendering the whole fan system kaput.

Did a fuse bypass and changed the fan belt.

If the repair cost is significant, would encourage you to implant in a BMW electric fan which gives you better FC & power due to lower weight and resistance. (ET Damage ~ $300-$400.00)

Hope this helps! :)

Bro mercw124, how much FC savings did u achieve for doing the BMW thingy? confirm no issue wif this BMW fan? i am exploring this option too as my FC is terrible. Can PM ur mech who do this? Thx

Haha, I've not replaced my mechanical fan yet.

It's my mechanic who replaced his own fan, and implanting a W210 engine into his W124. (It's the same actually).

But what I had learnt from my mechanic was that by doing a fan replacement, it should increase your fuel mileage by about 0.4-0.6km/litre. :D

Wah, i didnt know can implant a W210 engine into W124, COOL :yumyum: am sure will cost my leg n arm if i were to change, hehe.

Is the changing of fan still cost 300-400? if yes, think i am very keen to change.

The W124 16V and the W210 96-99's engines are interchangeable!

It's gonna cost a bomb, but my mechanic could do it as he had contacts in C&C! He did a one to one exchange for the W210's engine.

The fan replacement should be around that price, plus minus $100!

just to hijack this thread a bit,

W124 16V engine is actually better than W210 96-99 (also 16V engine) is due to W124 has another cooling pipe., that's y, pre-FL W210 has lots of over-heating problems!! (cost-saving mode lor)

never know about it. hmm...

Back to temperatures again. My auxillary fan died on me due to a damaged ball bearing and motor has to be replaced!

Opted to do an electric fan implant at $470. :D 4 hours of labour and hopefully a nice internal organ transplant!

More power, better fuel economy (ESTIMATED - savings of 1km/litre!) and lighter load on the engine.

Will update!

I have seen a friend of mine installed a "non merc" fan from JB. Looks wierd from the original fan because the surrounding plastic have to take out. But sure very quiet. Not sure if you can take some pictures to show us. Thanks!

Oops!

Turned out that it was just the outer fan motor that was faulty, replaced it for $270.00 but not the inner one which cost $470.00.

However, I did replace my engine valve seals and it's seeing an improvement in power now! =)

the inner fan which is belt driven by the engine power runs on clutches. if it fails just replace the clutch or u can opt to have the thermo fluid inside it to be renewed

Hi Archie. yes its normal. but once it goes above 100, then u have a prob. i used to have that on my 2nd 124 after doing a top overhaul. turns out that the valves had not been tightened properly. once that was done, never went above 90 again. btw, mine is 91 w124 non facelift n entirely original.

there's actually few thing you need to take note...

1st:- check do you frequently need to top up cooling water? If do so, there might be water pump leak (usually very hard to check because water tend to evaporate when leak due to heat).

2nd:- use an A4 paper fold into half, then put to the fan to see whether the paper can stop fan from turning. if it does, means the mechanism is failed and need to be replace.

3rd:- if you're car is fully CBU unit, then it might be earlier version of fan switch and it only start operate when temperature hit 100C, just change this sensor to 80C will do.

Lastly, take noter if your car is not using coolant, just top up water will do. Because when top up new coolant will clear the rust in your radiator and will caused leakage too.

Hope this helps
