Environment

One of our latest initiatives is BlueEFFICIENCY, a programme of innovative measures engineered into our vehicles to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. We’re steadily rolling it out across the Mercedes-Benz range and it features on all new E-Class Saloons apart from the most powerful V8 model.

BlueEFFICIENCY initiatives range from advanced engine management systems to smaller, more aerodynamic exterior mirrors. Essentially, we take all measures possible to enhance efficiency and performance - for example, the new E-Class Saloon has new tires that produce 17% less rolling resistance than their predecessors.

This attention-to-detail has resulted in the new E-Class Saloon having a drag coefficient from just 0.26 Cd – a class-leading figure for a luxury saloon.

In addition, all new E-Class models are EU5 compliant, with CO2 emission levels ranging from 139 – 256 g/km.

Model Lines

It’s important to have things just how you like them – so the E-Class Saloon offers a range of distinctive model lines to suit individual requirements.

With eye-catching touches such as 16” 5-spoke alloy wheels and double oval fog lamps, the SE exudes a premium feel. Inside, you’ll appreciate Artico man-made leather upholstery and stamped aluminum trim. Standard features include Advanced Parking Guidance, which identifies suitably sized parking spaces and helps guide the car into them.

The Avantgarde is a study in understated luxury, with Black Ash wood trim and sumptuous leather upholstery throughout. Lowered by 15mm, the Avantgarde features Direct Control Suspension as standard, plus LED daytime running lights and the exclusive Mirror Package.

The Sport model is a very different beast with AMG body styling and 18” AMG wheels accentuating the E-Class Saloon’s muscular looks. Inside, you’ll find an AMG sports steering wheel, ergonomic racing-style seats and brushed aluminum trim.

SE Model

Distinctive and desirable

Because different drivers have different tastes, the new E-Class Saloon comes in three design and equipment lines: SE, Avantgarde and Sport.

All model lines are beautifully appointed with generous standard equipment including stylish LED rear lights. Inside, you’ll enjoy the sheer luxury of the nappa leather steering wheel and gearshift, heated front seats and automatic climate control. Advanced Parking Guidance is also fitted as standard, making it easier both to find suitable parking spaces and to manoeuvre into them.

From the outside, the SE is distinguished by 16” 5-twin-spoke alloy wheels and double oval fog lights with black surrounds. Interior highlights include Artico man-made leather upholstery in black with stamped aluminium trim. The SE comes with Direct Control suspension and either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.

Avantgarde

Indulge yourself

Refinement and luxury are hallmarks of the Avantgarde model. The interior features high-quality leather upholstery in a choice of five two-tone colour schemes, while exterior styling is enhanced by 17” 5-spoke alloy wheels. Direct Control suspension has been lowered by 15 mm, giving the car a more athletic, powerful stance.

Other standard features include LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlamps with Intelligent Light System and headlamp wash as standard.

In addition, the Avantgarde features the comprehensive Mirror Package, consisting of automatically dimming driver’s door mirror, rear view mirror and electrically folding mirrors.

The E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 500 versions of the Avantgarde include 7G-Tronic automatic transmission as standard. These models are fitted with Direct Select, the steering column gear selector that puts gear selection within easy reach of the steering wheel.

Sport

Passion and performance

Everything about the E-Class Saloon Sport suggests dynamic, muscular performance. External design features include eye-catching AMG bodystyling and 18” AMG alloy wheels with 6-twin-spoke design. The interior reveals further motorsport-inspired touches, such as ergonomic sports seats with Microfibre / Artico man-made leather upholstery and an AMG sports steering wheel in nappa leather. Stainless steel pedals, AMG floor mats and brushed aluminium accentuate the car’s high-octane looks.

The Sport’s handling is optimised by Direct Steering and lowered sports suspension for optimum road surface contact and even more confident cornering.

To complete the racing-style driving experience, steering wheel gearshift paddles are fitted as standard on the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY or E 500.

Engine

Both the petrol engines available with the new E-Class Saloon have been optimized to deliver impressive torque without compromising fuel economy.

The 6-cylinder E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds yet manages 32.8 mpg combined. BlueEFFICIENCY measures such as low rolling resistance tires play a key part in minimizing fuel consumption, as does stratified direct injection technology, which extracts maximum performance from every drop of petrol. With CO2 emissions of 201 g/km, Benefit in Kind taxation is just 28% on the E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY automatic.

For those who demand even more exhilarating performance, the new E-Class Saloon also offers a formidable V8 unit. The E 500 generates up to 530 hp and can reach 62 mph from a standing start in just 5.2 seconds.

Suspension & Steering

The new E-Class Saloon’s impeccable ride quality is founded on a range of advanced suspension set-ups.

Fitted as standard, Direct Control with selective damping adapts shock absorption to suit the driving situation. During normal driving, suspension takes on softer characteristics for optimum comfort. When driving is more dynamic, damping becomes firmer to maximize stability.

For added agility, we’ve developed a sports-orientated version of Direct Control. Available as standard on the Avantgarde and Sport models, the suspension is lowered by 15mm and offers even tauter handling and response.

Finally, there’s our state-of-the-art AirMATIC suspension. Standard on the E 500 and optional with Avantgarde and Sport model lines, AirMATIC offers a choice of sport or comfort settings. In addition, it automatically lowers or raises the suspension depending on the driving speed, thereby enhancing handling and aerodynamics.

Transmission

The E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY both feature 6-speed manual transmission as standard. Producing lower CO2 emissions than automatic transmission, the 6-speed manual has Hill Start Assist for total convenience. Hill Start Assist prevents the car from rolling backwards when pulling away on an incline, holding the brake for a split second while the driver’s foot moves to the accelerator.

Both four-cylinder models also offer 5-speed automatic transmission as an option, while the V6 and V8 models come equipped with the 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission as standard. This innovative system ensures seamless shifting, skipping gears to reach the most appropriate ratio as quickly as possible. Drivers can change gears using the Direct Select lever on the steering column or steering wheel shift paddles.

Aerodynamics & Aeroacoustics

Every line, surface and edge of the new E-Class Saloon combines beauty with functionality.

Our design team has placed huge emphasis on aerodynamics, performing countless airflow simulations to fine-tune key components – from the seals around the headlamps to the contours of the boot lid. As a result, the new E-Class Saloon’s drag coefficient ranges from just 0.26 – 0.28 Cd, helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

We have also worked hard on aero-acoustics, minimizing the noise that penetrates the passenger compartment even at high speeds. Improvements to the body shell, more streamlined exterior mirror housings, and low-profile A-pillars are just a few of the measures we’ve implemented to ensure quiet, relaxing journeys.

Even the geometry of the new E-Class Saloon has been designed to reduce the build-up of dirt on windows and mirrors, improving visibility in poor conditions.

Exterior

The eye-catching front section with distinctive dual headlamps. The rising, wedge-shaped profile. The bold contour lines and flared rear wheel arches. Everything about the new E-Class Saloon suggests energy, balance and control.

While it clearly shares the same DNA as its predecessor, the new E-Class Saloon is more muscular, more athletic. Slightly larger dimensions, with an extended wheelbase and short overhangs lend the car an imposing, confident presence on the road. Meanwhile, subtle touches such as the arrow shape on the boot lid’s upper edge create a distinguished, elegant air.

Naturally, the build quality is impeccable and the car’s premium feel is further enhanced by an array of new exterior colors. Metallic paintwork options include Pearl Beige, Indigolite Blue, Palladium Silver and Exclusive Cuprite Brown.

Interior

The interior of the new E-Class Saloon echoes the bold, confident design of the exterior. An emphasis on horizontal lines gives the cabin a reassuringly sturdy, structured feel – you instinctively know this is a safe place to be – and materials are of the highest standards.

Build quality and finishes are flawless throughout and a wide range of design options lets you personalize the cabin to suit your tastes. These include an array of striking two-tone colour schemes, plus optional trim elements in wood and aluminum. All models feature a multi-function steering wheel and gearshift lever in exquisite nappa leather.

Comfort levels are exceptional with generous headroom and legroom for all occupants, plus ergonomic seating to ease the strain of long journeys. Other highlights include ambient interior lighting on the Avantgarde and Sport models.

Versatility

From business trips to weekends away, the new E-Class Saloon can accommodate all your needs. Compared to its predecessor, the latest model is 32mm wider, 16mm longer, and the wheelbase has grown by some 20mm. These increased exterior dimensions translate into an even more spacious passenger compartment with plenty of headroom and legroom for all occupants.

In addition, the boot lining has been redesigned, increasing its width by 24mm and length by 33mm. As a result, the boot now offers an impressive 540-litre capacity – enough room for four golf bags. The optional Easy-Pack boot box provides a secure means of stowing items such as laptops and bags.

For added convenience, the new E-Class Saloon features an array of handy stowage facilities throughout the passenger compartment.

Assists System

Breaking new ground in its segment, the E-Class Saloon features a host of innovative driving assistance systems. All of them are coordinated to maximize safety and ensure a stress-free driving experience.

Attention Assists

Unique to Mercedes-Benz, the new Attention Assist system warns the driver if he or she is at risk of falling asleep at the wheel. Fitted as standard on the E-Class Saloon, Attention Assist monitors driving behavior throughout the journey and ‘learns’ how to recognize signs of driver fatigue – for example, erratic steering movements. If required, it emits a visual and audible warning.

Tiredness kills – so Mercedes-Benz has developed an intelligent system to combat driver fatigue. Attention Assist constantly analyses driver behavior - particularly steering wheel movements – for signs of drowsiness. If they are detected, visual and audible warnings are issued, alerting the driver and reducing the risk of accidents.

Advance Parking Guidance

Unique in this segment, Advanced Parking Guidance takes the stress out of parking. At speeds below 22mph, the system scans the area for adequate parking spaces at least 1.8 metres longer than the vehicle. Once one has been identified, the system helps guide you into the space using visual and audible steering support.

Blind Spot Assists

Invaluable on the motorway, optional Blind Spot Assist warns drivers when a vehicle is in their blind spot. Active at speeds between 18 and 155 mph, the system monitors the blind spot areas and, if necessary, a red warning triangle appears in the appropriate exterior mirror. Should the driver ignore the visual warning and indicate to change lane, the system issues an audible warning. This option is only available to order in conjunction with Lane Keeping Assist as part of the lane tracking package.

Lane Keeping Assist

Optional Lane Keeping Assist alerts drivers to prevent them unintentionally drifting out of their lane. If a driver starts straying across lanes, a series of three vibrations of the steering wheel serves as a warning. False alarms are not an issue as the system can recognize intentional manoeuvres such as cutting a corner. Lane Keeping Assist is only available in conjunction with Blind Spot Assist as part of the Lane Tracking package.

Night View Assists Plus

Available from late 2009, this optional system enhances perceptual safety when driving at night. Using infrared light and a special camera, it produces a grey-tone image of the road ahead on the central console. This enables drivers to see pedestrians, cyclists, animals and objects in the road more easily without being dazzled by oncoming lights. It is only available with optional bi-xenon headlamps and COMAND.

Reversing Camera

Discreetly integrated into the boot lid handle, the optional reversing camera reduces the risks of bumps and scrapes when parking. The camera is trained on the area behind the vehicle so that the driver can see it on the head unit’s display and manoeuvre accordingly. It is only available in conjunction with COMAND.

Cabin

The E-Class Saloon has always been known for long-journey comfort and this latest model takes it to a whole new level.

All occupants enjoy increased shoulder room, elbow room, headroom and legroom, while the seats themselves are ergonomically designed for optimum support. Artico man-made leather upholstery comes as standard on the SE, with leather upholstery featuring as standard on the Avantgarde and Artico / microfibre upholstery standard on the Sport. Whichever model you choose, distinctive padded fluting further enhances the seats’ comfort, durability and style.

Front seats are heated and offer electrically adjustable seat cushion height, inclination and backrest angle – the driver’s seat features manual lumbar support. Optional active multi-contour seats feature a massage function and dynamic side bolsters that increase lateral support when cornering.

Integral safety measures include Neck-Pro head restraints, a seat occupancy detector in the front passenger seat, and ISOFIX child seat fixing points in the rear.

Driving Safety

Protecting you, your passengers, and other road users is our foremost concern at Mercedes-Benz. So we’ve fitted the E-Class Saloon with a range of features to promote safer driving – from the new Attention Assist to adaptive brake lights. When combined with active safety features such as our acclaimed Electronic Stability Programme (ESP®), these systems significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

Rides Quality

The ride quality of the new E-Class Saloon is second-to-none, with adaptive shock absorbers continuously adjusting the level of damping according to the road conditions.

The SE model is set up for a softer, more forgiving ride while the Avantgarde and Sport models have firmer, more dynamic characteristics.

For the ultimate in comfort, the E 500 is equipped with AirMATIC suspension as standard. Available as an option on other models, this advanced air suspension automatically maintains a constant vehicle level in any situation, regardless of vehicle load.

In addition, suspension is automatically lowered by 15mm when the vehicle reaches speeds of around 85 mph, reducing lift and increasing stability. When speed falls below 44 mph, the suspension returns to normal.

On poor road surfaces, AirMATIC can also be manually adjusted, raising the vehicle by 25 mm to avoid damage.

Automatic Climate Control

Maintaining a comfortable cabin temperature and a steady supply of fresh air helps ensure you arrive at your destination feeling relaxed and refreshed. With this in mind, the new E-Class Saloon offers a choice of two automatic climate control systems: automatic climate control and luxury automatic climate control.

Compared to our previous climate control systems, both are more responsive and efficient, easier to operate, and produce even lower noise levels. Automatic climate control provides individual control of temperature and air flow for the driver and front passenger while luxury automatic climate control offers even more functionality. Sensors monitor sunlight and pollutant levels in the outside air and an activated charcoal filter cleanses the in-cabin atmosphere.

Interior & Ambient Lighting

An array of interior lighting solutions within the E-Class Saloon reinforces the sense of understated style and quality. Standard features on the SE model include glove compartment lighting, individual reading lights and courtesy lighting above the centre console.

The Avantgarde and Sport models take the concept a step further, with ambient lighting as standard. Small LED lamps and optical fibres illuminate the undersides of the dashboard trim strips and door trim panels, and the controller on the centre console. When darkness falls, these subtle lighting elements lend the E-Class Saloon a restful business-lounge atmosphere for driver and passengers alike.

Ambient lighting is activated as soon as exterior lights are switched on or a door is opened. Drivers can select five different levels of brightness from the menu in the instrument cluster.

Adaptive Flashing Brake Lights

If the brakes are hit hard when travelling at speeds above 30 mph, adaptive brake lights start flashing to alert following drivers to the dangers ahead. The system has been proven to shorten the reaction time of the traffic behind, thereby reducing the risk of a rear-end collision or the severity of an impact.

Operating Safety

All functions and displays in the E-Class Saloon are ergonomically designed to keep drivers comfortable and focused on their driving. Controls have been thoughtfully arranged for easy operation with minimal distraction. The head-unit display is conveniently located at the top of the dashboard where it can be checked at a glance. And the multi-function steering wheel lets you navigate instrument cluster menus without taking your hands from the wheel.

In the event of danger

The new E-Class Saloon incorporates a variety of systems that can spot trouble and take appropriate action, both to help avoid an accident and to minimize the risk of injury.

Pre-Safe®

Pre-Safe® anticipates hazardous situations and, if necessary, initiates a series of pre-emptive safety measures in the vital moments before a potential accident. The system is triggered by events such as emergency braking or sudden steering movements at high speed. Protective measures include automatic activation of reversible seatbelt tensioners and closing of side windows. With the optional memory package, the front-passenger seat is adjusted into the safest position.

Distronic-Plus

Available with the optional Driving Assistance package, this radar-assisted cruise control system helps maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, even in stop-start traffic. If the system identifies a critical situation and the driver fails to respond to visual and audible warnings, the Pre-Safe® brake function intervenes, applying the brake automatically. This helps reduce the risk and severity of rear-end collisions.

In an Accident

If an accident should happen, the E-Class Saloon is fitted with comprehensive passive safety measures to help ensure that occupants and pedestrians are well protected.

Active Bonnet

When sensors in the front bumper detect an impact, this system raises the bonnet by 50 mm, creating an additional crumple zone. A Mercedes-Benz innovation unique in this segment, the active bonnet can significantly reduce the risk of injuring a pedestrian in a head-on collision. What’s more, it can be reset by the driver without having to visit the workshop.

Advanced body shell design

The new E-Class Saloon has been designed to protect. The body structure features state-of-the-art materials and innovative geometry, enabling it to absorb and redistribute huge amounts of energy in an impact. Large crumple zones at the front and rear provide a protective buffer for the high-strength passenger cell within. Other key features include reinforced doors and a telescopic steering column.

Restraint system

The new E-Class Saloon combines airbags, seat belts and Neck-Pro head restraints to maximize occupant protection. A total of seven airbags as standard includes two-stage driver and front passenger airbags plus front side bags and window bags. We’ve also incorporated a knee bag. Front seats and the two outer rear seats have 3-point seat belts with belt force limiters as standard.

After an accident

Following an accident, the E-Class Saloon has measures in place to make things easier for its occupants and the people trying to help them.

Crash-responsive emergency lighting

In the aftermath of an accident, crash-responsive emergency lighting can prove invaluable. After a slight delay, the system switches on some of the interior lighting, including foot well lights. In addition, hazard-warning lights are activated, the engine is cut off automatically, and doors are unlocked. These measures help occupants find their bearings and enable rescue services to locate the car – and carry out their work - more easily.

Entertainment as standard

The new E-Class Saloon offers a range of advanced entertainment and communications solutions to help you make the most of every journey.

Fitted as standard, the Audio 20 system features a 5” color display, radio, single CD player and aux-in socket for connecting MP3 players.

Bluetooth® connectivity is also included as standard, enabling you to make safe, legal hands-free calls while you’re out on the road.

Navigation 50

The superb Navigation 50 system is based around a large 6.5” color display and features DVD navigation for intuitive, effective journey planning.

Entertainment highlights include an integrated 6 DVD changer, plus radio, Media Interface and MP3 compatibility. For maximum convenience, Bluetooth® connectivity is also included as standard for safe, hands-free phone calls.

Command

This state-of-the-art system includes hard disk-based navigation with high-resolution maps for digitized areas of Europe. The integrated Traffic Message Channel (TMC) function helps you stay one step ahead of traffic delays.

Entertainment is provided by DVD audio / video. In addition there’s MP3 connectivity through the Media Interface, an SD-Card slot and integrated Music Register, enabling you to build up a library of your favorite tunes on the system’s hard disk.

Linguatronic voice control is also included and all functions can be performed via the ergonomic COMAND controller or using the multi-function steering wheel.

Media Interface

Located in the glove box, the Media Interface socket allows you to plug in your iPod or other MP3 player and control it via the head unit or multi-function steering wheel – far safer and more convenient than handling the player itself while you’re on the move.

This feature is available with CD Changer, Navigation 50 or COMAND.

Keeping in touch

In the new E-Class Saloon, it’s simple and safe to stay in touch when you’re on the road.

Integrated Bluetooth® connectivity comes standard, letting you pair compatible mobile phones with the car’s audio unit. Once paired, Bluetooth® detects your phone within a few metres of the car and automatically reconnects. This enables you to make safe, hands-free phone calls via the multi-function steering wheel or vehicle head-unit.

The E-Class Saloon also features optional telephone pre-wiring with hands-free facility. This allows you to charge your phone and easily access your address book and perform a number of functions. Simply purchase the appropriate mobile phone cradle from your Mercedes-Benz Retailer.

DAB Digital Radio

Digital radio can now be received in the E-Class Saloon for the first time. The optional DAB digital radio offers higher quality reception and a wider choice of programmes than its analogue counterpart. In addition, it delivers faster, more extensive and more accurate traffic information.

The system requires a roof aerial and, should the signal become too weak for digital radio reception, it automatically switches to the corresponding FM frequency. So your listening pleasure is uninterrupted.

Harmon/Kardon® LOGIC 7®

For a bespoke audio solution, E-Class Saloon drivers can choose the optional Harmon/Kardon® LOGIC 7® surround sound system. This equipment tailors sound reproduction precisely to the interior of the car in exquisite digital quality.

The latest version features a 450-watt amplifier – some 130 watts higher than its predecessor – and 5.1 Discrete Multichannel Surround. The 14 high-performance speakers have been configured specifically for the E-Class Saloon.
