Advise on Brake Pads and rotor

Hi all,

 

Need some advise for my A170 W169. Here's some background after visiting two mechanics

1. Mechanic A & B informed that front brake pads left 15% life

2. Mechanic A & B informed that rear brake pads left 60-70%, rotors look ok, can continue using

3. Mechanic A said when changing front brake pads, can consider reconditioning the rotors. The front rotor thickness is still good.

4. Mechanic B said that when changing front brake pads, change the front rotors as well. Re-conditioning will not save much $$$

 

I have the following questions

1. Can i just keep using the existing front rotors and replace with new pads for the front wheels?

2. If I use ceramic pads for the front wheels, is it ok if the rear wheels are not ceramic pads?

 

Any opinion will be very helpful. Thanks guys!

I further confuse you with my story. I change all 4 pads to ceramic pads as the originsl ones are dusty. I skim the front rotors for $50, much cheaper than replacing to new ones

1. Yes (As long that is no wobble, vibration while applying brake)

Thanks tech guy. Just got my ceramic pads from GoldenLink and will change them in this weekend.

You'll only need to skim your rotors if they're uneven.

That's because the contact area between the new brake pads & (old) rotor will be restricted to the ridges of the rotor.

 

Fine to use new ceramic in front and existing ones.

Did mine at Chip Soon last sunday. No time (lazy) to buy parts from stockist. Changed front and back rotors, brake pads. Total $940 including labour. Mine's a W204.

All are original mercedes parts. Rotors and pads

Didn't skim and got new front rotors in the end. Mechanic showed me the wear and explained in my case that skimming may not be worth the trouble. Bought parts from Golden Link. Labor to replace two front rotors, rear and front brake pads was $91.

 

Brake dust indeed lesser. I like the braking with ceramic pads better than original MB pads. Don't know if it's a matter of new pads or something what.
