Thieves strip car bare in one hour

By Lee Shi-lan

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia: Sixty minutes. That was all it took for police to find a stolen vehicle.

Unfortunately, that was also all it took for car thieves to strip the Kia Spectra down to its metal skeleton.

The raid on a vehicle workshop in Kampung Melayu Subang yesterday saw 10 Malaysians and two Indonesians arrested and cannibalised spare parts worth several million ringgit (1 million ringgit = S$417,700) recovered.

The episode began when the owner of the Spectra parked his car in Kampung Melayu Subang at 10.30am and went about running errands.

Upon his return, he found his car missing and immediately lodged a police report.

He also informed the Cobra vehicle security system company as the car had been fitted with the system which includes a global positioning system tracker.

The company informed the car owner of the position of the vehicle according to the GPS locator. It was barely two kilometres away from where it had been stolen.

Police who went to the area where the car was located found a legitimate vehicle workshop.

But further checks revealed a second area behind the workshop where cars were being cannibalised.

Sources said the owner of the Spectra, who was also there, was stunned to see that all that remained of his vehicle was the bare chassis.

Also at the scene was a partially-cannibalised Naza Citra.

Sources said the syndicate is believed to have been operating for at least two years.

The amount of spare parts discovered at the scene has prompted police to seal off the scene as there were simply too many parts to take back to the district police headquarters.

Police are currently checking the background of the 12 suspects.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Arjunaidi Mohamed confirmed the incident but declined to elaborate as investigations were continuing.
