W124 Mercedes

Gullwings

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am currently interested in a W124 Mercedes E-Class. Hope I can gain some inputs from current owners. What should I look out for, especially in terms of mechanics and bodyworks. Is the W124 susceptible to rust (I heard the W123 is, not sure about the W124 though).

And yes, what is the difference between a normal W124, and the "Masterpiece" version?

Thanks!

A true Masterpiece shud be a '95 e280. Comes with M104 direct injection straight 6 cyclinder engine, abs and srs airbag.

IMHO, besides engine, the telltale sign would be... If the front pax seat has a SRS airbag. Normally, ppl zhng lot of stuff but I don't know anyone bothers to zhng srs airbag too look like a MP :D

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

for bodyworks, depends on the previous owners interest on the car, my previous w123 dun really have must rust, all of my w123 and w124 seems to have the same location of rust which is rear windscreen corner base which leaks water into the boot. All these can be remend.

Masterpiece version there is E200 masterpiece also. Tigershark state E280, yes there is.

Airbags I forgot whether E200 masterpiece version got any difference, the exterior there is 1 think you can tell from those wannabe Masterpiece, which is the mini black sensor next to the boot open button.

I see. Hahaha I know the zhng part about Masterpiece, so I don't know if some cars are the "real deal" or not. Not much differences right?  Maintenance and petrol consumption, is it very expensive uh? I scared this one will become a money pit...

Also considering the 190E, and maybe the old Volkswagen Beetle... But now still kinda at preliminary stage la, haven't gotten my license yet, so now can only plan... :P

All used cars if not properly maintained can be moneypits. Mechanically the W201 190E and W124 are quite similar so parts are quite easy to get and very cheap compared to just about any car today. W201 is a little less common so body parts and interior trim may be a little harder to source locally. That said there are some gems running around, and some that I'm not so sure should be allowed on the road... best take along someone who is familiar or get a trusted mech to do a pre-purchase inspection.

An old bug is lovely, but all my friends who have one or more agree that it can be a real labour of love. ;)

Masterpiece was a limited run of higher spec 16V cars.. Typically the things you would look for are the IR sensors on the door pulls and just below the bootlid. Internally they had the burl walnut trim, electric mirrors on both sides, electric rear sunshade, electric front seats (some with memory function) and leather, instead of MB Tex.
