Terry free to face Man Utd after ban overturned

Chelsea players appeal to referee Mark Halsey after he sent off Chelsea's English defender John Terry

LONDON: Chelsea captain John Terry will be able to play against Premier League champions Manchester United this Sunday after the red card he received during last weekend's league win over Manchester City was overturned here on Tuesday.

"At an independent regulatory omission hearing today (Tuesday), a claim for wrongful dismissal from Chelsea's John Terry was upheld," an FA statement said.

"As a result of today's hearing, Terry's three match suspension has been withdrawn."

The England captain was given a straight red card during Chelsea's 3-1 victory by referee Mark Halsey for a professional foul on City's Jo but television replays appeared to show there were other covering defenders, notably Ricardo Carvalho, between the Brazilian and the goal.

Chelsea appealed on Monday and Terry is now free to face United, who beat the Blues in the Champions League final, as well as Stoke City and Aston Villa.

Scolari: Blues made many mistakes

Luiz Felipe Scolari was far from happy with Chelsea's performance in Tuesday's Champions League clash at home to Bordeaux, despite the 4-0 win.Despite the emphatic scoreline at Stamford Bridge in his first European match, Scolari felt there was plenty of room for improvement.

"We know that we made many mistakes in the second half," said the Brazilian.

"We tried to attack without the ball and with no good connections. But most important for us is the result.

"It is important to start with a win because in this competition you never know what will happen.

"You see that Cluj beat Roma. That is a warning for us for the next game.

"It is important to win and if you play well that is better, but today we did not play every well.

"They make many mistakes when they have the ball. When you play in the Champions League and are winning 2-0 at half-time you need to work the ball and control the game. You don't need to win 5-0, it is still the same three points."

Rare headed goals from Frank Lampard and Joe Cole put Chelsea in control of the Group A encounter, then Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka added late strikes.

The result, if not the performance in Scolari's eyes, capped off a pleasing day for Chelsea after the decision of the Football Association's independent regulatory commission to clear John Terry of the red card he was shown at Manchester City last Saturday.

Scolari said: "I am satisfied because it is the first time I am a coach when they changed the decision of the referee.

"I think only in England this would happen. In other countries the referee is the God.

"This time the referee said he made a mistake. For me it is a surprise, a positive surprise. The Football Association understand that the referee makes mistakes sometimes like you and me."

His attitude contrasted with the anger of Sir Alex Ferguson, who claimed a Manchester United player in the same situation would not have been so fortunate.

However, Scolari refused to be drawn ahead of Sunday's Premier League blockbuster against Ferguson's side at the Bridge, saying: "I don't speak about Manchester United, I speak about Bordeaux."

Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc, a World Cup-winning centre-back with France, was left to rue his side's poor defending.

He said: "When you look back and analyse the match, you have to say we were up against a superior team but we showed them too much respect.

"Maybe we held back a little bit. We weren't aggressive enough. The scoreline says it all.

"When you fight as hard as we did to get in the competition you have to give more in terms of effort and commitment.

"We could have done more and given a better account of ourselves."

Scolari Hails Blues Spirit

Luiz Felipe Scolari believes team ethic is separating Chelsea from the rest with confidence in the camp growing by the week.

The Brazilian coach now wants his players to build on Saturday's 2-0 victory at Stoke in the Barclays Premier League when they face CFR 1907 Cluj on Wednesday in the Champions League.

Goals from Jose Bosingwa and substitute Nicolas Anelka propelled Chelsea to the top of the table thanks to their fourth win in six league games since Scolari took over.

It was a gritty rather than glamorous performance and Scolari was pleased with the way his players bonded.

He said: "My team is in good condition and we are keeping our shape well. We are now at our best.

"All my players know their position and how to cover for each other if necessary. If a player makes a mistake, another one helps him out and that is important.

"We have won most of our matches and drawn only two. We have confidence as we have good players."

However, Chelsea suffered another injury blow at the Britannia Stadium when Salomon Kalou did not appear for the second half after taking a knock on his ankle.

The striker's fitness will be monitored ahead of the Champions League match as will Joe Cole's. He was sidelined because of a slight tear in his thigh.

Deco (thigh), Ricardo Carvalho (knee) and Michael Essien (knee) will all miss the match because of injury.

Chelsea, though, have strength in numbers and a bright new recruit in Bosingwa, who arrived in the summer before Scolari.

The 26-year-old former Porto full-back made the breakthrough with his first goal for the club - and it was a special strike as well.

He cushioned a pass from Frank Lampard on his chest before rifling a shot into the corner beyond goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.

Florent Malouda saw his effort pushed on to the bar by Sorensen before Anelka made the points safe 14 minutes from time following a mistake by Leon Cort.

It was only then Chelsea could relax, according to Scolari.

He said: "It was a good shot from Anelka and gave us a little bit of tranquility. It was fantastic to win a game like this 2-0.

"It is impossible to play beautiful football all the time and it was difficult against Stoke.

"Whenever we made a mistake they arrived and tried to put the ball in the box. We had to pay attention.

"We always want to play football but sometimes the other team does not think that way. They just want to live off your mistakes."

Stoke suffered a blow ahead of the match when long-throw specialist Rory Delap was ruled out because of hamstring injury.

In addition striker Ricardo Fuller was limited to a second half run-out as he was suffering from a virus.

But they made a decent fist of it and Cort came close to equalising, his effort being cleared of the line by Mikel John Obi.

Manager Tony Pulis was pleased with the way his newly-promoted side went about their business.

He said: "We were more of a threat in the second half and even though Chelsea are on a different level to us we have to take positives out of the game. We cannot get too down in the dumps.

"The problem we had is we sat off them a little bit. It was just unfortunate the way their second goal came about as Cort just lost his footing. That killed the game."

Premier League - Chelsea down Stoke to go top

Chelsea went to the top of the Premier League as they defeated Stoke City 2-0 at the Britannia Stadium.

Jose Bosingwa's 36th minute opener was followed by a goal from substitute Nicolas Anelka 14 minutes from time as the Blues maintained their 100 per cent away record under Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The signs were ominous before Bosingwa's opener.

Michael Ballack's early stinger forced Thomas Sorensen into his first save with the Dane tipping a fierce shot from 25 yards over the bar.

Sorensen was also forced to dive to his right to tip a free-kick from the German around the post.

And there was still only 15 minutes on the clock when he stretched out his left boot to deny Didier Drogba his first League goal since March.

Frank Lampard had a goalbound shot blocked before Chelsea did make the breakthrough when the England midfielder fed Bosingwa from the right and the marauding Portuguese full-back collected the ball beautifully on his chest before beating Sorensen with a smart finish which Andy Griffin could do nothing about on the line.

Sorensen had to rush off his line to get to Florent Malouda's through ball just ahead of Salomon Kalou and the one-way traffic continued after the break with Lampard having a shot deflected narrowly past the post by Leon Cort before Sorensen pushed Malouda's shot on to the crossbar

Tony Pulis's side, who earned a point from a goalless draw at Liverpool last weekend, were rarely seen in the opposite third in the opening half with Mamady Sidibe's tame header their only effort on target.

But they improved after Ricardo Fuller replaced the ineffective Dave Kitson in attack and their best chance came on the hour when Cort's header from a corner was cleared off the line by John Obi Mikel.

Stoke continued to press and forced a series of corners but the game was effectively ended when Cort failed to deal with a cross from the right and as he slipped he only managed to chest the ball straight into the path of Anelka whose shot found the net despite Sorensen getting a strong hand on it.

Chelsea had chances to put some gloss on the scoreline with Ballack screwing a shot wide and Lampard scuffing an effort straight at Sorensen from point blank range but they will go to Romania for the midweek Champions League encounter with CFR Cluj in high spirits.

Drogba Convinced By Scolari

Didier Drogba has revealed that it was Luiz Felipe Scolari who convinced him to stay at Chelsea over the summer.

Drogba was upset after the departure of Jose Mourinho early last season and speculation suggested he could leave Stamford Bridge during the transfer window.

A number of Europe's top clubs were linked with Drogba but he decided not to move on after speaking with new boss Scolari, who took charge at the end of Euro 2008.

Having worked with the Brazilian for nearly three months now, Drogba is happy that he made the right choice and has likened Scolari to Mourinho.

"Scolari is one of those coaches who is very close to the players. His style is similar to Mourinho's," Drogba told The People.

"I like this type of coach. I feel much more comfortable with this style of management.

"I spoke with him and he showed he wanted me to stay and that is what finally convinced me.

"I have had a lot to think about throughout this summer. It is true that it was 50/50 as to whether I would stay but I still think I have something to prove."

Drogba is determined to help Chelsea make amends for last season's defeat to Manchester United in the final of the UEFA Champions League.

The Blues lost out on penalties in Moscow but Drogba believes they can go one step further in the competition under Scolari.

"Europe has become the unfinished business of my career," he explained.

"The game against Manchester United in Moscow is still a painful memory for the players.

"We had the cup so close but we have to forget and concentrate on reaching the final again this season.

"Chelsea were better than United in Moscow and we should never have got to penalties. We were on top in extra time and we should have finished the job.

"The team has another air about it at the moment. Scolari has connected well with the squad and that is the key for things to work well.

"The atmosphere is different to that under Avram Grant."

Bosingwa display delights Scolari

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari applauded Jose Bosingwa for "a beautiful goal" which propelled the Blues to a 2-0 victory against Stoke.Former Porto full-back Bosingwa scored in the 36th minute and also set up substitute Nicolas Anelka 14 minutes from time in the win at the Britannia Stadium.

It was Bosingwa's first goal for the club and a superb one at that from the 26-year-old Portugal international, who cushioned a pass from Frank Lampard on his chest before rifling a shot into the corner beyond Thomas Sorensen.

Scolari said: "The Stoke defenders made a little mistake because they were watching other players, not Bosingwa.

"They did not see him arrive in this position and he made a beautiful goal. He is good for us.

"Bosingwa is the right height, jumps well and also does the job of covering the defenders.

"He started out as a midfielder but then when he went to Porto, the coach converted him to right-back.

"Bosingwa has a lot of energy and power. He has improved a lot and has arrived in the national team. He is now a good right-back."

Chelsea stamped their authority on the game from the off but it was only after Anelka took advantage of Leon Cort's mistake that they were able to breathe easily.

Sorensen made a string of good saves and parried Florent Malouda's effort onto the bar in the second half.

Cort almost grabbed the equaliser before his error, only for John Obi Mikel to clear his effort off the line.

That was the closest the newly-promoted side came to taking something from the match at the Britannia Stadium.

The victory stretched Chelsea's unbeaten league run to 27 games and Scolari was pleased with the way his team went about their business.

He added: "It is impossible to play beautiful football all the time and it was difficult against Stoke.

"Whenever we made a mistake they arrived and tried to put the ball in the box. We had to pay attention.

"But we kept our shape and that was important. It was fantastic to get a win like this as Stoke created only one or two chances.

"We always want to play football but sometimes the other team does not think that way. They just want to live off your mistakes."

Stoke manager Tony Pulis praised his side for the way they battled throughout the 90 minutes.

He had to do without long-throw specialist Rory Delap, who damaged his hamstring in training on Friday, but believes his side can build on the performance and the one which earnt a goalless draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

He said: "We have to take positives out of the game and cannot get down in the dumps.

"We competed well against Chelsea and Liverpool. The problem today is we sat off them a little bit.

"It was just unfortunate the way their second goal came about as Cort just lost his footing. That killed the game."

Scolari sweats on attacking duo

Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of Joe Cole and Salomon Kalou ahead of next week's Champions League clash with CFR Cluj.Cole missed Saturday's win at Stoke through injury, while Kalou was forced off at half-time at the Britannia Stadium with an ankle problem.

Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is already without Deco and Ricardo Carvalho and he is unsure if Kalou and Cole will be able to make the trip to Romania.

"I don't know [for Kalou] because it's the second time in the same leg, I wish and I think for Romania it is okay," Scolari told the club's official website.

"For Joe [Cole], I say nothing until Monday, but Deco and Ricardo [Carvalho] are out."
