W211 - 2nd to 3rd gear jerk on morning cold move off. Normal?

Hi guys,

just a quick question. Any bros here encounter jerky gear every morning when the engine is cold?

My experience is when i moved off from my carpark, the gear shifting will jerk from 2nd-3rd gear, sometimes very mild jerk from 1st-2nd. This will continue for abt 5-10mins, depending on how fast the engine warms up. After which, everything will be back to normal again. Went to MBM for servicing, told them abt this problem, mechanic suggested that they will reset the system for me, but its still the same.

Any bros can advice?

Thanks in advance!! :)

mine is the 07 FL model. Mileage is rather high, abt 150k...

IMHO, check gear box maintenance history, and if necessary, to start with the lowest cost option first, that is to change ATF.

I was told that the E-class taxis can clock 150k in one year, but maintenance frequency increase accordingly too.

Hi there,

Not sure your problem is the same as mine. Btw, I am driving a w220, high mileage too. My shift was not jerky but rather a sudden surge in rev (the engine will rev beyond 3k sometimes towards 4k) during the 2nd shift. It don't last like yours 5 to 10 minute and is sort of one off and disappear after few km drive. But it does resurface later part of the day sometimes if the car was idle without being driven.

I had my mechanic to try it out once and he opin that throttle body might be at fault. However, that was prior to them replacing my fuel filter which was related to another problem. At that point, it feel like a turbo boost rather than gear shift problem. After replacing the filter, I felt that it was more like a transmission problem. I remember one of the mechanic did mention that there was something like an o ring which did not fit properly during cold start and problem goes away after warm up.

Anyway, I was thinking to speak to my mechanic on gearbox overhaul issue and if you are interested in the outcome, feel free to text .

Regards

I replace my ATF and was being told it was really dirty even thou I had just change it last yr. Reason was probably due to worn clutch. You might try to change your ATF as mine drove slightly better now.

As for gerabox overhaul, cost will be $3k+ for mine (not sure about E class) and 90% new (as they will replace majority parts of the gearbox).

Hope this helps

W211 transmission is very lasting... mine is YOM 2004 and I've clocked in more than 330k km on it and only recently I experienced the jerk on cold move off (2nd to 3rd gear). I checked around and was advised to quickly have the ATF changed and if the problem persist to have the gearbox overhaul. But when they found out that I've done more than 330k km on my mean machine, they suggested I skip the ATF change but go straight to gearbox overhaul.

My SA told me that I have managed to go this far (more than 330k km) before this problem surface is perhaps due to my driving style. While I love fast pickups, I don't meddle with the tiptronic but instead I floor the gas peddle each time I need a fast pickup. Plus I don't shift the gear to "N" or "P" each time I stop at the lights. Finally, I don't leave my gear engaged and engine running if I am stationary for more than 2 min.

Well, perhaps I'm just lucky...

Bro, this is an early sign of gearbox failure and I wouldn't delay getting it attended to as there is no telling when it will totally shut down.

Good luck, bro!

Thanks Bro for the very clear explanation.. I hink should be the ATF problem. Do you mind sharing where your workshop is? I had spoken to a few, but they just don't know what this problem is abt... I seriously think its wasting my time...

Hope you can share your workshop info with me. Thanks bro :)

i uses chip soon at tampines st 93. There are other workshop like the site sponsor stated by some bro here.

You may wish to ask around for quote first. I was quoted 3K+ and i am not sure whether it apply to yours cos we are driving diff model.

But i seriously think you should change your ATF and see if it help. I have been driving for a yr since i found this fault thou it may

be wiser to overhaul sooner than later in order not to alleviate the fault
