As my lights are usually set to auto, i din notice till now that the dial surrounding the knob to on/A for the exterior light doesn't light up at night. Only the knob is lit.

Is it normal?

The light is always set at Auto, not that we are always turning on and off, so why have so much light work? As long as the knob is lighted to enable identification, it's good enough. I wouldn't want my car interior to have so much light, in fact I tuned down the intensity of the interior lights. Car makers should look into how aircraft cockpit are design, unnecessary lights are turned off during flight and only turn on when needed, just like what SAAB has done.
