Road Tax Question

Just a few questions. My road tax for existing trade-in car expires 30 Mar, but new car delivery around 15 Apr.

1. Do I need to extend the trade-in car road tax for 6 months when I actually only need to use for 1 more month?

2. Can LTA allow me to extend my road tax for 1 month instead of the standard 6 months?

3. If I pay 6 months road tax, will LTA rebate me for the 5 months of non usage?

Yes...you need to renew the rd tax if you are intending to drive the car till the handover date.

2. Can LTA allow me to extend my road tax for 1 month instead of the standard 6 months?

Not possible.

3. If I pay 6 months road tax, will LTA rebate me for the 5 months of non usage?

If the car is scrapped or exported out, you will get a pro rated refund. If not, you will need to speak to the car dealer who's taking in the car. Naturally, he will try to siam this refund.

sounds good but your insurance will be problem. unlike govt, they are even more unlikely to return any monies.

Not true...all ins companies must refund any pro rated premiums if the policy is cancelled.

Depending on the value of the road tax.... if the amount is subtantial, ie for 2litre car and above, then i suggest that you hand your car in march to the dealer before rdtax expired. For the next 2 - 3 weeks, take this opportunity to try out our transportation system in singapore then you will be more convinced that spending so much money to buy a car is afterall worthwhile!

I agree! Till the point when you're sitting in peak hour traffic, realize you still need to pay ERP, even after you've paid tens of thousands to entitle you to own the car you're driving.

And there's still road tax, parking, insurance...

I have already set a deadline, if by 25th Mar still no sound no picture, then no choice have to renew 6 months road tax. If by then the SE can confirm delivery date in early April, then hand over car first and take public transport 1 to 2 weeks.

Incidentially, I wrote to LTA to help, this is the reply...

Dear Mr Lee

Request To Extend Road Tax For 1 Month Instead Of Standard 6 Months

FEEDBACK NUMBER: 20120302-0195

We refer to your enquiry on the above and our telephone conversation on 2 March 2012.

We would like to share with you that, road tax of a vehicle must be paid for 6 or 12 months.

You may wish to note that, road tax, like the Additional Registration Fee (ARF) and Certificate of Entitlement (COE), follows a vehicle. Hence, when the registration of a vehicle is transferred, the vehicle's ARF, COE and road tax will also be transferred to the new owner. When a vehicle is de-registered, any Preferential Additional Registration Fee (PARF) benefit, COE rebate and unused road tax will automatically be granted/refunded to the last registered owner of the vehicle.

Vehicle owners who are selling their vehicles are advised to factor the remaining road tax into the selling price of their vehicles.

We hope the information clarifies and that everything is in order. Should you need further assistance, please let us know.

Yours sincerely
