Pros and Cons of Piggyback ECU

I was surfing the net to look for answers to this but it ended up with more questions only. Does anyone know whats the pros and cons of a piggyback ECU?

The later models like the CGI has it's ECU that's locked. Need to do open heart surgery for a remap...that means warranty can be kissed goodbye. Further more, if it's fried due to poor tuner's knowledge...it will cost u a bomb.

For piggybacks, ECU is untouched...hence no fear of warranty issues. It's basically a plug & play device to fool the ECU to perform better, so everything is fully reversible if you need to return to stock. If your ride is an NA version, remapping gives minimal results, if not no difference. IMO, save the money & spent it on nice set of wheels/tyres.

thanx for the info bro. but is there an cons to a piggyback ECU? it seems like there are many pros for the CGI but yet to find out any cons..

The only cons I think of is the extra wiring harness which can appear unsightly, but if the installer is skillful, he can minimize it by hiding most of it out of sight. There are more pros than cons for piggybacks in CGI models due to restricted access to ECU.

In my previous ride (VW GTI), I wouldn't even look at piggybacks as remapping is easily accessible, giving me so many options (APR, MTM, ABT & Hansson's custom tuning). The power gains in this option is a lot more than piggybacks.

For some reason.. there's been recent spike in queries I've received about what's possible or not... looks like more people are talking about Mercedes Performance Tuning now.

And the answer is it really depends on the engine model, year of manufacturer, type of ECU etc etc...
