Need help! Rear wheel bearing

Hi

Newbie here and need help! Am driving E240 and recently there's a whining sound coming from the back when cruising fr 60kmh and up. Was told by a workshop near my work place that most likely rear axle bearing or wheel bearing worn out. He will need to strip the wheels out to confirm and price would be at least 2k!!!

Anyone had similar experience or can recommend a good workshop for proper diagnostics other than C&C?

Thanks

just to share:

recently change the wheel bearing (just for 1 wheel only) for a TOYOTA for about 200..

Symptoms: starting when travel above 80/90 will have a "wohh wohh wohh" sound.. at certain speed it will get louder and certain speed softer.. after maybe 1-2mths the sound start to come out at 60km/h.. den got it replaced..

Yup same symptom. Workshop mech says either wheel bearing or rear axle bearings, must strip then know. Is this consider wear n tear or design fault?

its a combination of both (design not good enough to withstand repeated use over extended period of time and wear n tear from daily driving)

Encounted same problem recently, went to a few workshop, intially was told that its bearing problem, changed two sides for $350.Problem not solve, was told its due to axle problem, quoted $2650 +300 labour fee for a used axle from the same workshop. Was also told that cannot repair the axle at all.The only way is to change the whole axle.Luckily went to Tan Lim motor at 51 Defu Lane 10,look for ah hua,he solve my problem by changing bearing in the axle at a cost of less than $1000.Reliable workshop with staff helping you to solve your car problem at a minimum cost.

A warm :welcome: to new members chapgaokang & danielsc.

Hope you guys will enjoy your stay with us and we look forward to see you at our events.

IMHO - For wheel bearing problem - usually you dun even have to dismantle to find out whether the bearing has worn out.

All you need to do is to jack up that particular wheel (free the handbrake if it's the rear wheel), try spinning the wheel with your hand. If it's a worn wheel bearing, you should be able to hear noise/sound from it.

If it's not worn wheel bearing, you will not likely to hear any sound at all.

Want a little more high tech - used a srew driver like using a stethoscope to hear the wheel bearing sound while spinning the wheels  (Used to do that when I was a young technician checking for worn motor bearings during preventive/maintenance work)

I would tend to agree that rear wheel axle bearing will be costly to replace due to the amount of work to dismantle and replace it.

That's why for Danielsc the 1st workshop "ripped him" by replacing the rear wheel bearings and not solving his problem, then proposed an used axle - plug and play to "make easy work & money". :fish:

So for Bro chapgaokang - If you do not wanna dirty your hands to check if it's a worn wheel bearing, I propose you go to Starblack for a check.

After lotsa mis-info, bobian went back to cnc to do a full diagnostics. Not wheel bearing but rear axle kaput. Same case as bro danielsc. According to cnc, outside workshop don't have the neceassary tools to do a proper bearng replacement, hence typically chg the whole axle with e recon one. Quoted 2k to replace or 8.5k for new axle. Finished my delifrance croissant n tell the se go marina south.

Got bearing replace at a workshop in changi north for less than 1k. Problem solved.

So this does seem like a common fault for pre fl w211..?..?..?

Good lobang! Is this a "general" workshop, or do they do a lot of MB (sometimes some problems need more diagnostic equipment, which do cost moollah ....).

Guest danielsc

It's more of a general workshop dealing with all

types of car with basic diagnostic equipment.

Actually I have another car (C180 '05) done at MBM

few months back.Should say they are quite pro but the

cost of repairing is consider quite high. Change 3x breather

Hose, car mounting, bearing and some other stuff ( forgot what

is ) for cost of $4000.Actually now I personally

Feels that can go to pro shop for some diagnostic and check out other

workshop for parts and workmanship, sure can save a bomb
