Has it got to do with OCD?!?

'Cos those with OCD will keep their ride very straight...Slightly slant, will re-park till straight...:frusty:

OCD=obsessive compulsive behavior...(not organized crime dept hor). Nice try Des, not quite right though it may be true. 20marks:becky:

Ok quiz ends now.

The truth behind why one should park their front wheels straight was told by a late well known mechanic/racer to me in my racing days. He was Mr Krishnan from CT Highway...RIP. He pulled me aside one day at his workshop when he saw how my car was parked with the steering at full turn. He said that when the car is started at this posture, the power steering pump will give a sudden increase in hydraulic pressure which in turn can strain the power steering hose leading to leakage or sudden burst.

Since that day, I always parked my car with the wheels straight.

When you're parked parallel on a slope, it is good practice to turn the front wheels \ \ (for our RHD cars) so that should the parking brakes fail, the car will slide inwards and the rear tyres will stop the car from going further once they hit the curb.

That is one of the questions in CA DMV theory test.

If you read Blackmercs posting in the 1st page, he rightly said that this practice is more relevant for manual transmission cars where drivers always park their cars at N. The right practice is always to engage in the opposite gear when parked on the slope with the handbrake...ie 1st gear if the car is rolling backwards, reverse gear if it's rolling forward. Turning the wheel is an added safety measure but can be done away with if the gears are used. That said, in auto cars, if one duly engage P when parked on slope & uses the handbrake..it should suffice.
