when do you use "N" gear?

You are absolutely right. Not many people realize that the most damage (wear & tear) is done to the tranny when shifting from P or N to D or R. Another words , every time it engages from N or P, the 'bite' that you feel in the transmission is actually damaging already. The more you do it, the faster it wears & the shorter the lifespan, save for other abuses like doing reverse flick in James Bond movies.:bounce:

just wondering sometimes my wife engages gear from Neutral to Drive when the car is still rolling backwards slightly after reversing out of the house... is this very bad?

Always ensure that the car has come to a complete stop before engaging any gear. Why is the car at N when reversing? Did she reverse the car & then put to N to roll backwards a little before engaging D? If it is...there's double damage here...:shocked:

she changes gear quite quickly... from Reverse to Drive while the car is still rolling backwards slightly.... :shocked:
