believe the gasoline itself is not the main problem...it is the vapors emitted that caused the explosion...

Er, the vapour comes from the gasoline mah... Actually, many do not realise that the biggest danger is not from the mobile phone, but from the running internal combustion engine of customers' cars. Ordinary cars do not come with spark arrestors at the exhaust outlet.

You are right. That's why cars should shut down when filling up petrol. I have seen many cars leaving their engine running with their family in there while filling up...apparently to stay cool in the car. I would often point it out to the attendant but he's most likely to shrug it off. Sad..it's a tragedy waiting to happen.

Well ! All got to learn from mistakes . Wait till one family become roasted then they will enforce I think . I been to a 3rd world country and the attendance refilled my car's tank while smoking . I double my speed of walking and stay outside the station till he closed back the cap after the filling . Phew.... ! The best part was the cigarette was on his lips when he was closing that cap .

Vehicles driving over roads, especially dry roads build up static electrical charges and this electrical field is maintained even when cars are stationary for a while. a petrol station provides all the ingredients of a spark incident.

The tires itself and the fuel tank has anti-static mechanism but shit happens.

Basically cellphones signals caused a sudden buildup of static electricity and using them in near vicinity of open flames and random flammable vapours have been evident to caused explosions.

It is a good and considerable thread by the TS.

what is amazing is people just cannot tahan a littlewarmth or hands not touchingtheir handphones. I have ,as a safety gesture, warned pump attendents n motorists but its either a shrug or a rude stare.

the other day, this guy left his kid in the driver's seat, engine on while refuelling and he goes into the station. I told the pump attendant in a " fierce way" n then the PA ask " Pump no.3 driver pls turn off engine".!

kid in active car with petrol pumping is a MASSA in Sg F1 scene! only WORST!

Singaporeans definitely do not have safety in our DNA.

Most sgpreans too lazy to switch off engine in a petrol filling stations, too lazy to signal intentions, too lazy to wave sorry or thanks ..think beginning to lose our moral compass.

Hope more will change and have a better attitude when using roads to make it safe for all.

After a long distance drive on Nshw, I always touch my car body and some metallic structure at the pump before refueling the car to try to dissipate the static charge built up. It is a habit I sometimes automatically practise even when pumping petrol in Singapore.

I used to be one of those u mentioned, lazy to wave thanks..

There was once I gave way to an uncle. He raised his hand up to his rear view mirror when his car is in front of me.

I was wondering wat the heck was that, swearing at me ah? So much for giving way.

After some seconds of brain reprogramming, then I realized he's saying thanks with his palm up. Just like wat my dad used to do when I was a small terror in his car.

Til now, I wave thanks n sorry to others like how that uncle taught me.

And I'm sure with ur posting, fellow bros will be delighted to get the timely gentle reminder from u.

Happy motoring..

i was driving along Cuscaden Road junction yesterday...when the lights turned green this SUV driven by one Ang Mo who was either dreaming or SMSing and didn't move for at least 15 sec or more...i was directly behind waiting patiently but those cars behind were honking... he finally came to his senses and started moving...but when I overtook him, he stared at me with his dagger eyes and pointing fingers at me...and i was thinking WTF...:fish: :tsk:

does it pay to be patience... or maybe i should have blasted my horn at him as well...

Taxi drivers do this all the time. I do it too. For better effect, have to pause for a while because the driver behind may miss the sign if it's too brief.

I am one of those who

1. Always kill the engine at petrol kiosks when refuelling. Wife and kids are used to it and will either be with me in the kiosk station buying tidbits etc or ask me to widn down the window

2. Regularly wave fo thanks or apologies. So much so my kids thought I knew everyone on the road and my wife just thinks I am crazy and prefers I keep 2 hands on the steering wheel LOL

Well said :)

Good habit, doc.

but i will prefer to keep the window closed. strong smelling petrol.

I always believe our kids will mimic wat their dads do and this habit will live on.

Keep it up!! :thumb:
