Considering this is my 1st post, and have been reading alot on this forum. Is it worth getting a 6-7th year old E200ML now?

Or should I stick w a new C180?

Cept I wonder if old Mercs give alot of problems. Worry most bout gearbox

Hi E200ML 5-speed gearbox and engine is very strong and lasting, it is common for a E200ML to reach 400,000km, or 1million km in some countries. Unconfirmed report from a friend just told me a Merc (Diesel) Cab driver told him his meter has just gone 3 rounds and his car is still going strong, that is 3 million km if found true :)

It all boils down to last owner's care and maintenance, like changing autotrans oil, use good engine oil and no silicon-inducing air filter, Coolant and aircon system no issues, regular servicing, no major accident to car frame and no hacking to CGW. The rest is relatively smaller matter and you will enjoy the comfort of the merc ride. :becky:

Mileage is the key. Try to buy a lower mileage one. My agent 's CLK w high mileage suay suay spent 13K for wear and tear parts.

Thanks bros for all the advice.

I hear that C&C has this check-up for $160 for used cars. Somewhat an inspection and no repairs.

Did the unspeakable and collected my 2005 E200ML today.

Dealer brought it to C&C for inspection. 2 major issues need to be replaced.

1. Engine mount

2. Camper Arm - brushings

Dealer will fix up the camper arm issue.

Is that the reason why when i steer or go over a hump .. i hear this occasional cracking sound?

How much is the costs to fix both issues?

Yeah, I'm also interested to know which dealer allows to bring the car to AD to check. Wouldn't mind paying a bit more to avoid buying a car with hidden surprises.

Hun Ling along Leng Kee Road.

I asked the dealer to bring in for check, on condition if there is no "major" repair due to accidents, I'll take the car. And yes, i paid $154 for the check @ C&C.

Didn't realize this form of engagement was rare.

Should we put it this way....

Many newer generation dealer are forming up each month and these group are more reasonable comparing the 80's or the 90's dealer.

I believed most used car dealer will accept this -

1) You viewed and tested the car , happy .

2) Neg on the price , agreed for both.

3) set term and condition, which is they would have to send the car to AD, STA, Vicom , your cousin, BIL , Uncle's workshop for a evalation inspection, if no major accident and wear and tear repair not more than $1K, Deal !

4) Pay them a deposit, if deal didnt go thru due to the inspection , deposit will be refund back to you in full.

Hope the step help and if such arrangement you are still not comfortable than you might have to depend on SMRT / Comfort .

9339,

I like the part about setting limit for repairs. Sometimes, what is major fault to the buyer is minor to the dealer.

Ya, by just saying minor or major got lots of diff in individual so better put it in $$$...... to some torn car mat might consider as major hahaaaa

My wife also just passed her driving test, she commented my lao pok W124 is too big for her, she dunno how to park it...

I was thinking should i look for an old E200ML for her or should i go with a W204?

Thanks for more information in this thread, i will go see the dealers and probably see if i can send it to C&C for checks prior to buying.

The E series are not small also actually.

And yes, if you insist on the C&C checks and if you're paying for it ($160).. i'm sure the dealer is ok.

Welcome my fren to our big family ! I am not sure on the camper arm bushing cracking sounds, but i dare say the engine mount is very common, been there done there !

As for cost, recommend you to go to Star Black, honestly, reasonable price and good services. Alot of our fellow members here patronize him, including me.

Hope to see you soon at our La Kopi or GTG !!!

To update:

I needed servicing ASAP thus could not send it to SB. Although the prices quoted was pretty decent.

However, i have not changed my engine mounting or the ATF yet.

I notice occasionally there's this "brrrrr-ing" sound coming from my car. Can feel slight vibration from the steering wheel. Not sure what's the cause of it (even my Sing Ming mechanic does not know).

Yes "brrrrr-ing" sound is from the SBC brake system charging the brake pressure. If its very loud/noticeable then that means your unit hasn't been upgraded by C&C. The changed/serviced version is a lot softer and pleasing to hear (like pretty power haha). BTW AFAIK actually SBC is the same technology used in the current Distronic Plus system's braking portion (Brake By Wire) :D

Mine recently replaced by C&C because the warning light come out.... after replacement, the sound still there and is quite obvious as before... Just need to get use to it.
