I've owned my 16V for slightly more than two months. Changed quite a lot of parts - some necessary, mostly not yet. Spent slightly more than $2k so far on parts and labour.

Just changed my engine oil in JB last week, paid RM15 for labour (own oil and filter). Just sucked out the oil via oil level dipstick. I was wondering whether to go ahead with the oil change when the worker searched high and low for the bonnet release lever in the car :)

Also had to help him decide how to put in the new filter element.

Car drives great and makes me happy driving it (if only the fuel gauge doesn't drop that fast).

Main problem so far is the air conditioner.

i)When I start the car from cold (cold as in in the morning and after working hours), the aircon compressor will not cut in. I have to off the engine and restarted. Lately, the car has to be restarted many times in order for the compressor to cut in. Driving a certain distance before switching off and restarting the engine helps.

Mechanic says it's the relay problem. The funny thing is, once I managed to get the aircon compressor started, the aircon will behave normally even driving to KL. Also, the compressor will run with no problem even if I switch off the engine for a few hours and restart the engine. It will only not cut in if the interval is too long, say, more than 8 hours.

ii) Secondly, the temperature adjuster does not seem to work. My aircon is very cold during the night/raining days. Even adjusting up to the red zone on the knob does not help. Do I have a missing/faulty thermostat?

Anyone knows of a good mechanic that understands the aircon system well? My regular mechanic is good with Merc, but does not seem to undertand the aircon system well.

Hi everyone!

I have had my car for slightly more than 4 years now and my shifter bushings is on its last legs as there seems to be some clicking noises when i shift. I also have to guess whether its in D or N as the stick is really loose now. Other than that, the car is running perfectly for a 21 yr old car (apart for the fact that I lost all my brakes in JB thanks to my new tires and was stranded there last month).

I will be upgrading my sound system next week. Settled on a simple Alpine head unit with iPod connectivity that i got real cheap for below 200 bucks. I am now looking for rear replacement speakers that would drop in nicely and fit behind the stock grille. Anyone got any cheap speakers to recommend? The ones I have now seem to be a strange size and are ill fitting.

To mushigen: maybe you could try this company called Top Cool at the new Eunos auto place? I tried them before on a company van and they were reasonable and seemed knowledgeable enough. Ill try and find the contact and PM you. BTW RM15 is real cheap! I just got chopped 200 bucks by my mechanic for a full service with synthetic oil a few months ago hahah. Ah well... my mech has to make a living as well i guess.

Hi all. My w124 has been running well. Recently had a prob with the fan belt. Noticed a slight squeaking in e morn n decided to get the fan belt changed as I last changed it 2 yes back n guess that it was due for a change. After changing it, e squeak was still there. Then e next day it turned into a long drawn out squeal that wouldn't go away. Power was down n e ac compressor kept cutting off. Brought in to e mech n was diagnosed with a bad belt tightened n damper. Proceeded to change e 2 n then car was back to normal. Better than normal in fact. More smoother n feels more powerful. Makes me wonder how e fan belt tensioner can have such a great diff on e car. Consumption also better now. Anyone has any insightinto this? As far as I know e belt should help with e water pump n alternator right? As well as e fan I guess.

I guess if the tensioner is failing in strength, the serpentine belt will be loose and there will not be enough friction to turn the alternator and whatever is hooked to the belt. The aircon compressor cut out, I believe, due to speed difference detected by the speed sensor - as a form of safeguarding. Just my opinion.

Btw, where and how much were you quoted for the belt and tensioner replacement? Do PM if it's not conv to reveal here.

Bro,

I got the fault rectified by a mechanic recommended by Kelvin.

Hello to all, recently got myself a 300TE, original from C&C.

Tons of things to do on the wagon.

Does anyone know if it is still possible to get hold of new WALD or AMG bodykits?

I am also looking for a set of period correct 17" AMG.

Appreciate any pointers.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Congrats on getting your car. Its pretty rare in Singapore to come across an S124 much less a 3L version. For accessories, you can try contacting Benzline, they do have some stuff for our car the last time I checked but not much by now I would think since the car is so old already. You can also try your luck with Propel, the scrapyard for second hand stuff. Sometimes they have cars that come in with still usable and interesting parts but you must be prepared to bargain hard. Your next best bet is eBay. Lowering springs and shocks are still available from Eibach and Bilstein. If you are looking for sportline suspension parts, Tye Soon would still be able to bring them in on a request basis. You just need to pay a deposit and wait really long. I brought some rare parts in for my W124 last year and it took them around 3 months to bring it in but they did it for me. My advise to you would be to use the car first and bring it back up to stock condition. The car is around 20 years old and most parts will inevitably need replacing. Save the money and spend on the essentials first before looking for other modifications.

Hi, tks for the advise.

The car is mechanically sound, as the previous owner has send it for regular servicing and most worn parts changed. I have the receipts from 2006 onwards. Only thing I need to reconfirm is the SLS and sort out the brake.

I have checked with Benzline for the WALD kits, but no longer available. Not sure what other stuffs they have though.

As for Propel, gotten a full set of interior from Johnathan.

Any suggestions for the springs and shocks? Was thinking to lower the ride with Bilstein, but not sure which model is suitable.

Thanks.

Most people Ive seen in the US go with the Eibach pro kit and Bilstein HD combination. This supposedly gives a firmer ride with better handling. The next most popular one is a partial Sportline kit which can be obtained from peachparts.com. This one would probably retain most of the ride quality but with slightly better handling. You could probably ask the part numbers from them nicely and head down to tye soon to order since they are all original mercedes parts. Either of these set ups would obviously leave your SLS useless. You need to tie off the system and make sure the mechanic knows what he is doing. Most people simply leave the pump in place with the fluid circulating so that it doesnt burn up.
