Auto trans problem?

I have a 2007 e200k. Lately I noticed a slight jerk forward just before the car comes to a stop. At the same time, the rev counter would move up slightly from 900rpm to around 1100 rpm and then settles back down again to 800rpm at rest.

Mileage on car is 55k. Does it imply that its time for the transmission to be overhauled?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Head over to Khang's auto at sin min hes the expert for auto transmission issues. Pirces are also very competitive and hes a really nice guy. All the best hope you get it fixed

Went down to Khang's. But the tester felt that there is not a serious problem with transmission. So, I have made an appt with C&C to diagnose problem. According to the advisor I spoke to, it isn't normal for the car to behave as such. So there is definitely an issue somewhere.

Will update.

Sharing some info I've gathered from the BMW forums. Some 5ers also experienced the same problems as you faced. After some checking, PML did a software upgrade for those affected cars and the problem is gone. I don't know if this might work for your car, but no harm giving it a try.

Thanks for info Newc180. I sent in to C&C today. Advisor said that it is due to downshifting of gear. He got me the company car to show me that it is normal. During the test, I noticed that it has a similar behavior but the revolution during gear change was very slight, about 50rpm and therefore you hardly feel the jerk at all as in my case.

In fact, there is a 400rpm difference during the gear change for my car and that is huge and accounts for the jerk which I felt. Originally, i thought it was only 200rpm. Just realised today that one bar rep 200rpm.

So, they would be doing something to get things right. Not sure if it is an issue with the engine, autotrans or adaptation.

Will update.

have w221 s class, there was also a slight jerk when downshifting in auto, mileage at that time was about 20,000 km, it was due for a service, so after i send into c&c, the jerking was fixed. i guess you need a service? or maybe oiling of engine....C&C customer service is really top notch, when i send car in for service, 2 hours later i receive phone call about diagnosis and what needs to be done. cheers!

Just to update. C&C has dropped the transmission to take a look at it and did some adjustments. After getting the car back, the jerk ( I would rather call it a forward surge now ), is noticeably lesser but nonetheless still there. Perhaps I am fastidious but it does affect me in the overall appreciation of the car.

I have also tested some pre-owned vehicles. While you could see the rpm move up when it changes to a lower gear, you could hardly feel any forward surge. This forward surge can be felt clearly when you brake to a stop and the feedback can be felt at the brake pedal. However, I must add that there are times that you do not feel the surge at all.

So, I am not sure if this is due to the momentum of the car or otherwise. This could also be an indication of some wear and tear of certain parts of the transmission. After all, it has done close to 60000km. Btw, the transmission oil and filter has been changed during the process.

Well, it looks like I will have to accept and learn how to ride this somewhat irritating bucking horse for a while.

I've the same issue as urs. Sent my G/B for overhaul at some shitty Ubi Pro-conti cars workshop. G/B broke down twice in less than 11mths after the overhaul. Same upshiftin problem that the car surges forward when cold. That shitty workshop still doesnt want to admit the problem.. Anyway nobody in the whole of singapore can ID the problem... Not even MBM... I've not tried Khang's Auto yet.

Cos i dun think I should live with such flaw of the car manufacturers despite paying a premium to own it. I've recently jus changed the ATF and the jerk is still noticeable on gear 2-3... used to be 1-2 n 2-1... :tsk:

Hi just to add on, so you just live on with the jerk or the problem is totally solved?

I had the same problem with u with accelerating the car will jerk forward...

Mine does not jerk when accelerating. The forward surge is felt when the car is decelerating to a stop. According to the mechanics, it's due to the automatic change of gear to a lower one and causes this surge. You can really feel the feedback from the brake pedals. This is my problem.

Hi,

First I can understand your frustration and worry.

I had this problem too last time.

Reset ECU etc etc all did not work.

There's definitely a problem. Finally, they changed A LOT of things to the gearbox and god knows what thing and the problem was gone.

I remember it's due to wear and tear.

If i'm not wrong, you drive your car pretty hard, and may even use the pedal shift a lot?

Jon
