topping up of coolant

I received this message while driving to work today.

'Top up coolant'

Does this usually happen? What i understand is that the car dun usually require topping up during its life cycle. My car is 8 years old now and has clocked 140000km.

Oh and is it okay if i top up with water?

Yes you can top up with water but if it happens again, bring your car to the workshop to check for leaks.

 

My W221 never need to top up until recently. 

 

My top up frequency increase from once a month to once a week. Finally found a leak at the radiator hose
