A180 whining sound at 60-70kph - see video

Hi guys,

I just got this new A180 about a month ago and have noticed this "problem" from the start.

At 60-70km/h, there is a whining noise coming from the left side of the cabin. It sounds like its coming from the engine or gears. The sound only happens at that speed range. Anything faster or slower and the sound disappears. Also, I think at quick acceleration, there isn't the sound.

I've attached a video clip showing this.

Is this a normal variant of the 1.6L engine? If so then I'll not push my dealer to investigate. I think if these sounds are not a normal "feature" of the A180, then it would be really difficult to investigate the cause.

I can't upload to here cos the file is too big so here's the link at the A class forum UK

Any bros with the A180 experience this?

Hi , my B180 have the same prob too. I've noticed the whining sound since the first day of my ride. Went to Pandan Loop on the 3rd day after getting my car. Did a test drive with the the Technical Staff and he confirm the sound is Not normal! Now waiting for my courtesy car to be available for them to investigate my car. It's best for u to go down to Pandan Loop service center and u youself drive the car and point out to them the whining sound. Hopes this helps.

Hi seahsx, so changing the drive shaft solved the whine? What did they say about your sound at gear 2? Did they give you courtesy car to use while waiting?

Thanks pearljam! I really thought I was being paranoid and fussy but this is a Benz! It shouldn't sound like this right!

I shall go down to pandan loop to sort this out as soon as I have the time. What courtesy car did they give you?

Yes rhymes gave me a courtesy car which I waited for about a month for it before sending my car in. Gear 2 still has very slight whining sound which is different from the one at 60-70kmh. I suspect its the engine trying to rev, but I'm still monitoring it. If really worsens, I will send in to cc again
