Accidents involving taxis.

Recommended Posts

Be very wary of taxis and some taxi drivers.

A passenger swung open the taxi door and smashed my wing mirror.

SMRT later shirked, saying I have to claim from the taxi passenger.

But it offered me 20% of my excess as goodwill.

Another taxi bumped into my rear and then pleaded with me to settle it privately with him. To cut a very long story short, when I agreed, he said he wants to pay by instalments. When I told him I want to get a repair quote first, he changed his tune. From an ultra-polite, humble, remorseful and "religious" guy, he turned cold after I did not drive all the way to Sungei Kadut to inform TransCab that I agreed to settle with him privately, within the 24 hours deadline for him to report to his cab company.

In both cases above, the cab drivers asked me to agree to settle it privately. A service adviser told me that that was the standard "trick" they use. If the other party does not go to the taxi company to sign off, the taxi driver will have to pay his taxi company $2'000 or thereabouts. And once you agree to his instalment plans, finito! You will have to continuously chase him for the instalment payments. And apparently usually they dont pay you anymore. What can you do?

And give Malaysian-registered cars a wide berth too. If you get into a scrap with those cars, you suffer! Very hard to claim from their insurance companies.

Agree. Wait for them to settle privately, wait till neck long already still waiting. On the other hand, if they claiming against you they also don't give mercy.

same experience.. hit by a taxi yrs ago.. From an ultra-polite, humble, remorseful and "religious" guy, pleaded to settled privately...he turned cold after i call him the 2nd day(within 24hr) frm my garage to tell him abt the charges of repair... told mi "wait i call u back, i ask first", "i got passenger", "cannot cheaper ar?" zzz

bloody hell like i own the garage...

my reply was.." uncle nvm la... u just wasting my time nia, go claim ba, next time dun tell mi how good how nice, end up waste my time come to garage then gotta wait for u again, thank you, bye bye.."

The only thing i did differently was... during the accident, aft both of us got out, i took out pen and paper, wrote he was the one accidentally hitting onto mi, and causes the accident. then with his name ic and address, he sign.

wow ... good advice

Previously got involved with taxi also, he side-swiped me from lane 1 (i was on lane 2), damaging my rear bumper.

When he offered to settle privately I refused, and felt a bit guilty, because he looked so harassed and pitiful ... but going from your experience, now i know i did the right thing.

I sent my car to C&C and made a 3rd party claim from the taxi's insurer.

what surprised me was, nobody even bothered to look at the pictures i took ...

Imo it is BS.

Claim THEIR passenger? Who in the first place let their passenger alight at a place where they can get into accidents?

The 20% 'goodwill' is already an indication they are guilty and hope u will quickly close the case.

U should pursue till the end. Make use of your insurance company.

Btw, looong time back I successfully claimed over 1k from a pickup for opening the passenger door without checking.

I was driving a nissan sunny then, the whole side mirror assembly broke.
