Interesting videos. Check out 27.00 min when the video explains the toggling of the camshaft by a simple pin, and how that activates the larger lobe into play. 

 

This is simpler then the Honda VTEC, where oil pressure will cause a pin to lock the rocker arms so that they'll be profiled by the larger cam lobes.  The application of the 2 technologies are also different, with Mercedes emphasising comfort and economical power with variable turbo and direct injection, whereas old school Honda VTEC is simpler and geared towards high rpm NA power delivery.
