W204 Touchshift

Any bros played with it often?

When I upshift from 2nd to 3rd around 2000rpm I notice it wouldn't upshift instantly. It will continue to rev up with when my foot is on the throttle (even though the dashboard put 3rd gear, I know I still am in 2nd). I have to ease the throttle around 2500rpm and it still lags while upshifting.

Is it something to do with the W204 gearbox not allowing gear change at 2500rpm and below? Because I notice it upshift a tad faster when I go to 3000rpm in 2nd and shift it to 3rd.

If you are talking about pushing the gear lever to the right for upshift, it won't work.

Those +/- thingy are not the true blue manual shift, it will downshift when push to the left but will not upshift for pushing right.

Maybe I am wrong, but I have tried many times in the 4.5 years of my W203 and I have concluded it is just a fancier way of the normal L1>L2>L3>D like in a Jap car (and anyway, I like the +/- way).

Yea that is the one.. The +/-..

I test drove some other cars with paddle shift and they have manual overwrite (meaning, if I want it to stay in 3rd gear, it stays there no matter how much I rev it)

Thought the touchshift would behave a tad like a manual shift, but when I tried was disappointed.. Haha! Shift to 3rd, still revving, still revving! Then suddenly it changes from 2nd to 3rd ::)

That's the behaviour of auto gear ma.....if you shift to 3, it will stay at 3rd gear and go on revving till the computer think enough is enough and it will shift for you to protect the engine.

The +/- behaves just like any other auto gear but presented in a nicer way.

One more thing about this is if you push left and hold, it will go to the current gear it is in and if you push right and hold, it will go to D.

Eh? I thought if you hold left it will go to the lowest possible gear at the given time? Must go test..

Ya i think that what CKlasse say is correct, even on track if i trying to down shift from 3 to 2 for corner, it didnt kick dowm immediately untill the car had slow down to certain speed than it will down shift, think is just a little fancy stuff but i love the +/- feel....

From my playing around with the Touchshift:

It won't go from a lower gear to a higher gear unless the car has reached a fast enough speed. Driving a manual is the same isn't it - you don't shift from 1 to 3 unless the car is moving fairly fast, or the engine will be strained. Try upshifting at say, 3,000rpm or more - the shift will be instantaneous. Also, don't take your foot off the accelerator when you upshift, unlike driving a manual.

For downshifting, it's the opposite - you take your foot off the accelerator, or else you will get a big jolt.

For those who can't downshift from 3 to 2 for corners, the transmission won't allow you to do it if your engine speed is too high. This is to protect your engine from over revving.

Yup, it is more instantaneous when I upshift at higher rpm. Although I want to upshift at lower rpm it doesn't allow haha.. I remember when I learning how to drive, my instructor told me. 10km/h - 1st gear, 20km/h - 2nd gear, 30 km/h - 3rd gear, 40ish50 km/h - 4th gear, almost practically upshifting at 2000rpm. Which I tried couldn't work on the C XD

let's say you shift right to D3, it just means that the highest gear you allow

the gearbox to upshift to is 3rd gear.

so it doesn't mean that it'll shift to 3rd gear, just limited to 3rd gear

ie. no upshift to 4th/5th, just like any autobox L1/2/3.

notice that the highest you can go is D4? coz it's still an autobox

and D5 makes no sense as that's as good as D, ie. no top gear restriction.

Ooh.. So that's how it works.. Understood thanks!

Another question, is it better to manual downshift to overtake or just floor the accelerator? Any difference?

i think manual downshift will be slightly faster, as when you floor the accelerator,

you will accelerate in current gear until a certain point of pedal travel

(it feels like stepping on a button) then it'll kick down to lower gear.

try both then you'll see.

Personally, I find the manual downshift slower, for the C180 anyway...
