Petrol RON95 vs 98

Been using Caltex RON 95 faithfully for 1.5 yrs since the day I colllected my merc W204 CGI. Last week the pump attendant mistakenly filled up with 98. I graciously accepted the mistake & thought "Why not try?"

After 1 tankful, this is my observation between the 2 petrols:

1) there is no differnce in power when pushed in the mid to high rpms.

2) the take off is slightly smoother with the 98

3) at slow speeds around car park ascending ramps, the gear box does not hunt for the right gear (1st gear) & can easily climb at crawling speed with 2nd gear.

4) I seem to get better mileage with 98...about 30km more with the full tank.

Conclusion:

Would you spend the extra $15-$18 for the same amount of petrol??

Though the extra mileage is negligible, the car does seem to be happier with the new juice. I'd say YES!

For normal Merc engines, there's no difference bet 95 and 98. Engines tuned for 95 will not benefit from higher octane. Usually any perceived differences are psychological.

Performance engines tuned for 98 will degrade it's performance when filled with 95 or 92. Usually by retarding the ignition cycle to lower risk of pinging.

I agree.

Whether is it 92,95,98 or V-power, the different petrol does not make ur ride go faster.

U can only go as fast as your engine capacity is.

Guess we r looking more at the smoothiness of acceleration n drive.

Enhancements like performance spark plugs, high flow air filter, CAI, etc, optimise the engine performance, not increase engine performance.

Kindly correct me if i'm on the wrong track.

Bro VBlaster_W211,

Have u tried RON92?

cos my W204 min requirement is 91 but i not brave-hearted enough to try.

I agree with you...& as mentioned in my post, the car does feel smoother though there's no discernible increase in power.

Which model is your W204? My min RON requirement as listed on the petrol cap is 95, not 91.

Guys!

A quick check on my soft copy of owner manual likely to solve the confusion!

If what I read is correct, both Bro Ivan & Jim are correct.

The manual reads:-

Gasoline Engines:-

unleaded gasoline (at least 91 octane, average value between 96RON and 86MON)

RON stands for Research Octane number

MON stands for Motor Octane Number

So 91 octane fuel is about equal to (RON+MON)/2 = (96+86)/2 i.e average of RON96 & MON86) =91 or know as the anti-knock index

So guys - Our car needs min RON95 and not RON92 or fuel octane number of at least 91

Do not confuse RON & Octane number

Just wanna koaypoh add abit.....

The octane level in the petrol does make a difference in the milleage.

A heavier car with RON95 achieved lower milleage compare to RON98.

I'm into my 2nd tank with Caltex 98. Seriously, I'm loving it. My car behaves better with this juice. All the quirky behavior that I presumed was normal for my car (since day 1 with Caltex 95) like gear hunting, mild jerks on low rpms around carparks are gone. Another observation that I made is the exhaust tip....there's no more carbon (black soot) at the bottom of the tip with 98, something that I routinely clean every week. This shows that 98 burns more cleanly, thus this explain why car feels smoother. The recent increase in petrol price dampens the fun though. :S

I still have not conclude my current 3.0L NA engine.

Bro,

Whats your definition of "better"?

better feel of acceleration, "cleaner" exhaust tip, better mileage, better-looking station specialist, etc

Some swear by Very Power. Some by Techron, Some like Tiger.

I used to pump Shell for the past 8 yrs and mostly V-power cos i believed in the mktg gimmick of keeping the engine clean.

Moreover, im using UOB plat card for 10% disc so happy happy pump Shell.

Recently, my friend's friend, Nissan pumps Shell then he lost his race to a blue Kia so he no pump Shell anymore. :silly:

Now i no money.

Apply Citibank Div card n pump Esso.

Better discount than Shell. LoLz

PS: The chinese missy at the cashier oso bery cute. :P

Darlie advert on rediffusion in Kantonese!

IMHO RON98 is usually good for forced induction engine!
